Review ~ A December Bride (A Year of Weddings Novella)

December Bride

Happily ever after begins today. The honor of your presence is requested at a December wedding.

Every couple has a love story. Join us for a year of contemporary, seasonal wedding novellas, releasing in e-book every month. Each e-novella will include an excerpt from another wedding story in the Year of Weddings Collection as well as a list of the author’s full-length novels.

What started as a whim turned into an accidental – and very public – engagement. Can Layla and Seth keep up the facade in Chapel Springs this holiday season – for the sake of her career . . . and his heart?
Under normal circumstances, Seth Murphy, the best friend of Layla O’Reilly’s ex-fiance would be the last person she’d marry. But the news of their upcoming (and phony) nuptials convinces a big client that Layla may be high-society enough to work for his agency, a coup that would put her fledgling home-staging business on the map. Seth has secretly loved Layla for years, even when she was dating his best friend. Maybe she’ll never forgive him for the way he hurt her back then, but he has to try. And Layla is willing to keep up their engagement farce until she’s landed her client. For Layla, it’s the chance to save her career. But for Seth, it’s his last chance to win her heart. A year’s worth of novellas from twelve inspirational romance authors. Happily ever after guaranteed.

My ****4 Star**** Review

It’s the big day, except it’s not the big day Layla O’Reilly originally anticipated. It’s her ex-fiance’s big day, and he’s marrying her cousin. Layla thinks she has everything lined up to show just how much she’s moved on, but her plan falls apart when her date calls with strep throat just hours before the wedding. Seth Murphy decides to be the answer to her problem. There’s only one thing wrong with that, though. Layla blames Seth for her break-up with Jack. Seth’s the one that introduced Jessica to Jack. Things heat up from there at the wedding when Seth announces to a snotty Jessica that he’s engaged to Layla. Then even further when he starts to show Layla that he really has feelings for her.

This story had me cracking up from the start. While it’s a story that has been told many different times with just different characters/settings, it was still thoroughly enjoyable. If I wasn’t laughing, I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face. It’s a good thing for me that this was a novella. I needed my sleep last night, and this is one of those stories that you can’t put down until you’ve finished. Seth was so incredibly sweet, and I was just mush right along side Layla. Then when he got jealous, it was absolutely adorable. I also have to say that they had an incredible first kiss! That’s where it stopped, though. This was a clean romance through and through. It is an absolutely perfect story for the holiday season! A warm and fuzzy 4 STARS!!! I look forward to reading more from Denise Hunter.

The Ark’s Cargo Tour & Guest Post

Ark's Cargo Front CoverTitle: The Ark’s Cargo
Author: William Buisch
Publisher: Trafford
Genre: Animal/Nature Memoir
Pages: 392

Purchase at Trafford

This memoir describes the challenges a young man faces in achieving his dream of becoming a veterinarian. Even a period of homelessness and limited resources do not interfere with his commitment to achieve success. And this is only the beginning! Soon he is faced with the challenges of working in the jungles of Panama, facing the ravages of a roaming black jaguar and the defenses of a native village against the entrance of man or beast. Then, how about Haiti, where the Tonton Macoute militias believe in instant justice, rarely valuing life, or Columbia, where the drug lords have absolute rule. As if that isn’t enough, consider working in the African continent, along the tales surrounding the first shipment of Charolais cattle to the United States or the many facets of working with the wild mustangs in Colorado. Each exciting adventure is told with suspense, drama, and humor! Enjoy!

Guest post by William Buisch

If you like romance, love, excitement, drama, adventure, exotic tales/tails and situational comedy, I have just the right book for you! And then with the ever present animalistic behavior and the discussion of male prowness while being, a bit bullish at times I am sure you will appreciate and love this collection of real life stories. Don’t be sheepish or cackle at the story line! But rather, enjoy the horsing around and the discriptions of unusual harems and the sexuality of a semen collection facility. All of this and more is included in the award winning book entitled, “The Ark’s Cargo: For the Love of Animals!

The memoir is about an International Veterinarian who worked in poverty stricken areas of the world including that of working in Haiti, the jungles of Panama, in Colombia in areas under the control of drug lords, in Mali, along the road to Timbuktu and in Kenya where the Maasi believe they own all of the cattle in the world.

The stories include efforts to improve the health and welfare of both wild and domesticated animals in order to improve the well being of the human populations living near by. While the episodes may get a little wild at times, each adventure doesn’t necessarily achieve the success hoped for. Nevertheless, the lessons learned and the relationships developed established long lasting effects of international trust and respect that will last for years to come!

Having worked with the Wild Mustangs in Colorado and Nevada may be the highlight for some. But facing the terror of a black jaguar, or being “attacked” by a Battalion of Troops, or facing a native with a shield and spear aimed at one’s heart; will often attract the attention of others. And then there is the matter of the ever “screwing” Screwworm Fly; the experience of shipping cattle in a school bus; or the experience of being an unseasoned seaman in the North Atlantic. All I can say is; this is only the beginning! And as such, do enjoy!!!

About the Author ~ William Buisch

Inspired by biblical passages and teachings, the author cherished his work as an international veterinarian. His passion for improving the health and welfare of domesticated and wild animals is most noteworthy. Working within diverse cultures, he observed vast health improvements in animals and, as a result, in people living nearby.

becoming josephine
Title: Becoming Josephine

Author: Heather Webb

Publisher: Plume

Pages: 320

Genre: Historical Fiction

Readers are fascinated with the wives of famous men. In Becoming Josephine, debut novelist Heather Webb follows Rose Tascher as she sails from her Martinique plantation to Paris, eager to enjoy an elegant life at the royal court. Once there, however, Rose’s aristocratic soldier-husband dashes her dreams by abandoning her amid the tumult of the French Revolution. • A debut as bewitching as its protagonist.” —Erika Robuck, author of Hemingway’s Girl and Call Me Zelda
  • Vivid and passionate.” —Susan Spann, author of The Shinobi Mysteries
  • Rose Tascher sails from her Martinique plantation to Paris to trade her Creole black magic culture for love and adventure. She arrives exultant to follow her dreams of attending Court with Alexandre, her elegant aristocrat and soldier husband. But Alexandre dashes her hopes and abandons her amid the tumult of the French Revolution.

Through her savoir faire, Rose secures her footing in high society, reveling in handsome men and glitzy balls—until the heads of her friends begin to roll.

After narrowly escaping death in the blood-drenched cells of Les Carmes prison, she reinvents herself as Josephine, a socialite of status and power. Yet her youth is fading, and Josephine must choose between a precarious independence and the love of an awkward suitor. Little does she know, he would become the most powerful man of his century- Napoleon Bonaparte.

BECOMING JOSEPHINE is a novel of one woman’s journey to find eternal love and stability, and ultimately to find herself.

“Webb adds new frisson to the often fictionalized travails of an unlikely empress…Although the book covers the same ground as many other treatments of Josephine’s life and times, Webb’s portrayal of the range of Josephine’s experience—narrow escapes from bloodshed and disease, dinner-table diplomacy, and her helpless love for Napoleon, her children and a small dog—is exceptionally concise and colorful. A worthy fictional primer on Empress Josephine.”–Kirkus

But things are about to change …

    My ***3 Star*** Review

The Happy Endings Book Club was written almost as a group of short stories. You get little snippets of the lives of those in the book club all around Christmas. That being said, this story didn’t have a particular strong sense of Christmas to me as a whole. I enjoyed some of the stories, but others not so much. I thought there were several good quotes scattered throughout, and that helped with the overall enjoyment. Some of the characters stuck with me, while I felt other characters were hard to remember. The characters I enjoyed, I really hoped to read more about than I got, while the ones I couldn’t relate to, I was glad I only had the short snippet. I also found it interesting that some of the short stories had a fantasy twist. It seemed a little awkward to me with the whole story not coming off as fantasy.
I think I really would love to read Michi’s story as a full-length novel, or even a novella. I wasn’t into her parents life-style, but her story intrigued me.
While I didn’t enjoy the whole book, I would definitely read more from Jane Tara. I liked her writing style, and the stories I didn’t care for were just merely personal preference.

    Review ~ Merry Humbug Christmas

    Merry Humbug Christmas

    Blurb

A Merry Humbug Christmas features two holiday romance novellas from hilarious and heartwarming author Sandra D. Bricker. — the perfect gift to yourself or someone else at this most wonderfully stressful time of year.

In “Once Upon a Jingle Bell,” A Bah! Humbug cruise to the Mexican Riviera is Joss Snow’s answer to this year’s quest to avoid the holidays completely; at least until she’s rebooked on a different kind of cruise altogether. Candy canes, holly wreaths, reindeer and ornaments seem to be stalking her on the 12 Days of Christmas holiday cruise extravaganza. An escape back to land is her only goal . . . until she meets a kindred spirit in rugged Irishman Patrick Brenneman, and then the game is on! Avoid Christmas festivities at all costs . . . except maybe for that one stop under the mistletoe.

In “It Came Upon a Midnight Deer,” Reese’s guilt over abandoning best friend Joss on their holiday tradition of avoiding all things Christmas is trumped by the joy of her recent engagement. Meeting Damian’s family for the first time on idyllic Sugarloaf Mountain is about as far from that Bah! Humbug cruise as she can get, and Reese can hardly wait to get there. But from the moment they hit that deer in the road just two miles from the cabin, everything seems to go wrong. There are no drummers drumming or pipers piping this particular year! And once she sets her future in-laws’ family cabin ablaze, she’s pretty sure there won’t be even ONE golden ring in her future.

    My ****4 Star**** Review

Merry Humbug Christmas is two super sweet fast-paced clean romance novellas with a Christian edge, all wrapped up in one package.
In “Once Upon a Jingle Bell,” Joss Snow is bent on hiding from all things Christmas – or hiding them from others. She also has an obsession with cheesecake that I can TOTALLY relate to! Patrick quickly has her whole avoiding Christmas scheme flipped upside down. He doesn’t believe in the commercialization of Christmas, but he believes in the true meaning behind it. I absolutely love that Patrick really understood her motivation behind her actions and the things she says. It only annoyed me that it took Joss a little bit to jump fully onboard.
“It Came Upon a Midnight Deer” is set at the same time as “Once Upon a Jingle Bell,” but it’s Reese’s story. Reese is Joss’s best friend that bailed on her at Christmas to spend the holiday meeting her new fiance’s family. Things go horrible right from the start as they hit a deer on the way. Then things get progressively worse. However, Damian, Reese’s fiance, is absolutely amazing from the start. He’s handsome, wealthy, and tender-hearted – the perfect hero for any romance novel.
Both stories have great characters and just the right amount of drama with the mushy ending we all want – especially for Christmas! I recommend this book to anyone looking for a great holiday romance. If you’re looking for a clean romance, then this is perfect! 4 Stars & I look forward to reading more from Sandra D. Bricker!!
*I received a copy from NetGalley and B&H Books in exchange for an honest review.*

About the Author ~ Sandra D. Bricker

    Sandra
“I’m going to be a writer when I grow up!” Sandra D. Bricker declared these words to her father on a Sunday afternoon in Slidell, Louisiana. She was 5 years old, and was referring to being able to string her cursive letters together to write her full name for the first time, but the declaration proved somewhat prophetic.

By the time she reached high school and her first article was published in The Cincinnati Enquirer, Sandie knew writing was what she wanted to do. For more than a decade, Sandie lived in Los Angeles and, while writing in every spare moment, she studied screenwriting and worked as a personal assistant and publicist to some of daytime television’s hottest stars. When her mother became ill in Florida, she walked away from that segment of her life and moved cross-country to take on a new role: Caregiver.

“I guess most people would see my career as a publicist as a sort of dream job. But giving it up turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to me!” she declares. “Not only was I given the gift of getting to know my mother as an adult woman before she passed away, but I was also afforded the blessing of being able to re-focus on writing novels in an effort to pursue my dream of a writing career.”

That career weaves a web that draws in every age of reader. Sandie’s interest in telling a story knows no boundaries. Three novels for middle readers carved out the beginning of the journey; then Avalon Books followed up with two hardbound romance novels in 2001: unWANTED: Husband (romantic comedy) and Change of Heart (romantic suspense). The response was tremendous, and Sandie was asked to pen a sequel to Change of Heart … and so Sins of the Past was released in December 2003. Next up was another romantic comedy; Wish I Weren’t Here was released in February 2005.

“I’m a Christian woman, first and foremost,” she says. “So the last couple of years has been a bit of a dream-come-true. Summerside Press chose me as one of two authors to launch their new Love Finds You line in October 2008 with Love Finds You in Snowball, Arkansas, a romantic comedy for the inspirational market. So the best of all worlds, as far as I’m concerned!”

More hilarity continued to follow from this award-winning author.

Love Finds You in Holiday, Florida (Fall 2009) and Love Finds You in Carmel, California (Fall 2010) for Summerside Press, and The Big 5-OH! (Spring 2010) and Always the Baker, Never the Bride (Fall 2010) for Abingdon Press.

Future books will include sequels, The Big 4-OH! and The Big 3-OH! for Abingdon Press.

After spending nearly 15 years dealing with her celebrity clients’ fans, Sandie finds it amusing that she is suddenly the one getting fan mail! “When people were actually buying my books at a recent signing, I found myself wanting to go around and invite them all to dinner or offer to bake them cookies. Hey! In fact … maybe I’ll do that very soon.”

    My ****4 Star Review****

Dina Gregory is just a breath of fresh air in this fast-paced romantic novella. She cracked me up from the start! I absolutely loved her honesty. She wasn’t afraid to say how she felt, and she didn’t concern herself about how anyone else expected her to act. She falls fast for Ben, and I mean super-fast, but the amazing thing is that it’s believable. You get it. Now, it may not be so believable from Ben’s perspective – realistically speaking. However, in the story it works. Plus, it’s a Christmas story, so I wanted to read about miracles and happy endings, and this was both of those! I’d recommend this novella to anyone else looking for those! I also better mention that Ben is absolutely amazing! He’s had more than his share of heartaches, but he’s ready to live again.
A super-sweet 4 stars! I look forward to reading more from Sugar Jamison!
Warning: this story contains strong language and sexual content

    My ***3 Star*** Review

This was quite an ecclectic mix of stories to me, and the writing styles were all different. This is one of those books that is quite likely to have a story (or excerpt) that you enjoy, but you may not like the others. Some of the stories I would have given 4 stars to had they been standing alone. I was thrown off by the excerpts, because they weren’t Christmasy. I felt like they detracted from the overall Christmas feel of the book. Don’t get me wrong. I definitely want to finish several of the stories those excerpts were taken from, but I expected straight Christmas from this book and didn’t get it.
From Jill Shalvis, you can expect some language and sexual content. You can also expect laughing a lot, a sexy hero, and some strong emotions right from the start.
In Kristen Ashley’s story it took me a bit to get all of the names straight. I kept having to flip back to see who was who. You can also expect some language from this one. I must confess that I was annoyed by the heroine’s dialogue in this one. Her incessant use of “my man” annoyed me. Nonetheless, the story was still sweet.
Hope Ramsay’s story was a little on the unbelivable side, but it was incredibly sweet and romantic. It’s just the kind of story I love to read at Christmas. This would have been an easy 4 stars for me.
In Molly Cannon’s story, I felt like the hero’s character just flipped like a switch. Then the sexual side of the relationship he forms seemed a bit rushed. Aside from that, this story was another one filled with laughs, and it was very intriguing. I didn’t want to stop flipping pages till the end.
In Marilyn Pappano’s story, you can also expect some language and sexual content. You can also expect an amazing heroine, that doesn’t let a broken heart turn into a broken spirit. This story was a bit on the corny side, but so very sweet.
So as I mentioned, these authors all had something different to share, but there’s guaranteed to be something for everyone. 3 Stars!!!

    Excerpt

      From Mary Mary Quite Contrary:

Once upon a time…in Hell, I was pretty bored.

Things around me weren’t burning hot enough like they usually were. I liked my Hell cooked well. A medium-rare- cooked Hell wasn’t my thing. It might be the French’s. Hell was missing a certain sparkle to it that day. The stars in the sky were shimmering a tad too bright for my eyes; instead of dimming, dying, or turning into Meteors, hitting the Earth, and putting an end to the whole mess. I could even feel a cold breeze swooshing through the coal and fire in Hell. I felt like I was on a freakin’ summer beach. What kind of Hell was that? We could lose our reputation like that.

Then I found a horrible blooming flower growing through the coals, unaffected by all the heat and cinder surrounding it. What the hell was going on? I just couldn’t believe it. It was such an awful day in Hell. Should I put the closed sign outside? “Sorry, we’re closed today due to maintenance. Come back later. A sin or two too late won’t kill ya.”

I imagined that the next thing I’d hear would be birds humming around me, fluttering and singing like in cartoons – which would be the end of me. Didn’t I feed the fire enough people today? Was Hell suddenly out of sinners and killers? I had been working hard all year. So hard that I thought I should get the Medal of Honor. But it looks like it was all in vain. Or maybe it was just a temporary thing today. You know those days when you wake up in the morning and in the middle of the night at the same time?

    About Cameron

Things you might want to know:

Cameron writes books that he can’t find elsewhere, basically to amuse himself. Everything Cameron does is for fun, so don’t take him seriously. Never call him a writer. He hates that. He prefers the word: Storyteller, or the boy next door who claims he can tell stories.

If you like his books, horaaaay! He loves ya too. If ya don’t, hoooray! Now we know in advance that this relationship isn’t going to work.

Although his books are ordinary on the surface, they hold many secrets that he might reveal one day. What matters the most to him are characters struggling to find their identities and place in the world.

Things you don’t need to know:

He celebrates his birthday twice a year, the day he was born and Friday the 13th. He wants to live in a bubble house. He is a damn good guitar player. He is damn good architecture college drop out. He likes boats, beaches, bears, beards, bananas, bars, barfights, beans, bikes, bones, butter, babes, bakery, blizzards, and pirates (he thought it was spelled Birates when he was a kid.)

And honestly, writing in third person sucks! It’s so fake.
