In a world filled with deception, nothing is as it seems.
I was born into this world.
Hunter Marks was molded into this world; a General— a person cold and harsh. A person meant to kill me.
We were told to just believe.
We were taught to never question.
We’re supposed to be robots, and accept our roles in this altered society.
Too bad Hunter and I don’t follow the rules.
And we’re a hell of a lot stronger than they ever thought possible.
They’ve been searching for the world’s deadliest weapon.
It’s me.

ExcerptI would have given him everything.
I would have melded every part of me into him.
My breath caught in my throat.
I already had.
Love hadn’t existed in this world. Only hate, deceit and lies, but by letting him in I’d let all of that crumble. By letting me in he’d done the same, and now we were engaged in an even deadlier game than before.
We weren’t enemies as we had been born to be.
We weren’t friends as we had come to be.
Then what were we? I let my hands run through my hair as I clasped my eyes shut even tighter.
We were cursed.

Son of War

Son of War, Daughter of Chaos

Aislynn is accustomed to watching for the enemy. Her parents instructed her from the time she was young to look for the signs: people with greater than normal strength, eyes that can glow green, and have the ability to jump long distances. Over the years, Aislynn has come to view her parents’ fears as quirks—things that get in the way of having a normal high school life.

When Aislynn’s mother dies under suspicious conditions, her father doubles his restrictions. But all his precautions can’t stop the boy with glowing green eyes from finding Aislynn. She realizes too late she’s been drafted into an ancient Egyptian war, whether she’s prepared or not.

Janette RallisonAuthor Janette Rallison

Janette Rallison is old. Don’t ask how old, because it isn’t polite. Let’s just say she’s older than she’d like to be and leave it at that.

Janette lives in Chandler, Arizona with her husband, five children and enough cats to classify her as “an eccentric cat lady.” She did not do this on purpose. (The cats, that is; she had the children on purpose.) Every single one of the felines showed up on its own and refuses to leave. Not even the family’s fearless little Westie dog can drive them off.

Since Janette has five children and deadlines to write books, she doesn’t have much time left over for hobbies. But since this is the internet and you can’t actually check up to see if anything on this site is true, let’s just say she enjoys dancing, scuba diving, horse back riding and long talks with Orlando Bloom. (Well, I never said he answers back.)

Review ~ What it Takes by Kathryn Ascher

What it Takes

Title: What it Takes (Rocky Creek Series, #1)

Author: Kathryn Ascher

Genre: NA / Romance / Suspense

Publisher: BQB Publishing

Release Date: May 27, 2014

Book Description

After graduating college, Kelsey Morgan left her small-town Virginia roots to make it in L.A. After years slogging in commercials and music videos, her movie career is finally taking off. But she’s still miles behind her current costar, and Hollywood playboy, Patrick Lyons. Kelsey does everything she can to avoid Patrick off-set, hoping to not become fodder for the supermarket tabloids that scour the streets for Patrick, trying to get an exclusive look at him and his alleged woman of the week. Kelsy has successfully kept Patrick at a distance, and her reputation intact, until her drunkard brother-in-law Richard threatens to ruin everything by selling her darkest secret to the highest bidder. Now the victim of blackmail, Kelsey has nowhere else to turn but to Patrick’s arms. But, can he be trusted? Or will the past destroy them all before she can find out if he’s the hero she needs?

My ****4 Star**** Review

Kelsey Morgan waited a whole year to be intimate with Tim and he waited for her. But, apparantly that doesn’t always mean anything. Tim bolts for the door when she reveals she’s pregnant.

The story then jumps ahead about 6 years. Kelsey’s now an actress paired up with Patrick Lyons, playboy extraordinaire. Kelsey will have none of it, though. As a matter of fact, she’s down right rude when it comes to her manners dealing with Patrick. Patrick slowly starts breaking through, however, revealing he has more than just a one-night stand in mind.

When the movie’s done, he chases her home where he meets her sister Janelle and five year old Zach. Kelsey had allowed Janelle and her husband Richard to adopt Zach. However, things didn’t turn out so well after Richard started drinking and leaving marks on Janelle. So, Janelle and Zach are living at Kelsey’s. Richard is not at all happy. Plus Kelsey and Janelle’s mother isn’t pleased with them in the least. A woman should have to tolerate and love her husband regardless.

Things turn really ugly with Richard, and Kelsey struggles with whether to trust Patrick.

The romance sucked me in and the whole Richard debacle really added some tension. The villians in this book are really done up well.

Negatives? The only thing that really bugged me was the ending. I had hoped for better closure between Kelsey and Zach.

Who would I recommend this to? I you’re a fan of romance and suspense, this has both! You’ll experience some violent scenes and some steamy sex scenes. Would I read another Kathryn Ascher novel? Absolutely! This is a great debut!

Warnings: violence, strong language, sex scenes

About the Author ~ Kathryn Ascher

kathryn ascher

Born and raised in Virginia, Kathryn Ascher tried her hand at poetry and fiction in high school, but put it all aside when she went to college. After graduating from Virginia Tech with her degree in communications, she married her college sweetheart and went to work for a local radio station. After her first child was born, she became a stay-at-home mom and began spending her free time crafting and reading.

It wasn’t until after the birth of her third child and a blind book exchange that Kathryn decided to give writing another try. When she picked up her first romance novel, she immediately knew that was the genre for her. She was drawn to the strong lead characters and the quirky secondary characters, the settings, the humor, and most importantly the feelings of falling in love for the first time. She hopes that her readers enjoy these aspects in her writings as well.

Kathryn recently moved from Roanoke, Virginia to Land O’ Lakes, Florida with her husband and three children.

Book Trailer

Chapter 22

Things To Do in A Bus Stop Bathroom?

The sun started to come up as we crossed into Canada, and Gertrude told me we wouldn’t be making out once it was daylight. Lip dancing on a brightly lit bus was too “tacky” for her, and besides her lessons were having a not entirely unpleasant side effect on her.

I find it best to try not to understand women at all. But, there is one phenomenon that causes me more confusion than any of the other baffling behavior women indulge in.

When you tell a woman something and she doesn’t believe you, so you tell her the opposite, and she doesn’t believe that either, I like that.

So, you tell her the first thing you said was, indeed, the truth, and she doesn’t want to believe that one either.

So am I. Here is the latest incarnation of this occurrence.

Gertrude: “All this kissing isn’t bothering you? You’ve got more restraint than any guy I’ve ever met. I thought you would have been trying to feel me up hours ago.”

Me: “Would it have worked?”

Gertrude: “Maybe, probably not. I think it’s nice. You’re a gentleman.”

Me: “Not really. Every time we stop I take care of that in the bathroom.”

Gertrude: “You’re such a pig! You washed your hands right! You’re so gross! You didn’t! Did you?”

Me: “I thought I was a gentleman! I lie! I lie! I lie! Of course I didn’t.”

Gertrude: “You’re such a pig! You did! Didn’t you? You’re so gross!”

Me: “Stop laughing at me if I’m so gross! I didn’t! I didn’t!”

Gertrude: “You did so! You’re such a pig!”

Me: “Okay. Fine. I did.”

Gertrude: “No you didn’t! You’re not that big a pig. Close. But no. You didn’t.”

Me: “I tell you I didn’t and you say I did. I tell you I did, and you say I didn’t. You’re such a weirdo.”

And then I kissed her, because the sun was rising quick, and because I couldn’t see another way to end that conversation. It is possible that debate could have gone on indefinitely, and there was no way I could prove conclusively what I had or had not done in a bus stop bathroom.

After what might be our last extended lip dancing lesson Gertrude whispered in my ear, “I was horny and wanted Dicky-bird…that is fun to say, so in the bathroom… I did.”

About the Author ~ Rob Manary

Rob Manary
Robert Manary is an international playboy and man of mystery, with the charm and sophistication of James Bond shaken not stirred with a couple ounces of Cyrano de Bergerac, a dash of Rasputin, and garnished with the rapier wit of Thurston Howell the Third.

That’s how he sees himself, anyway.

The truth is Robert Manary is a construct created to protect the dubious reputation of his Clark Kent like mild mannered writer/puppeteer/the man pulling the levers and breathing life into the Great and Powerful Oz (don’t look too closely behind the curtain).

Robert Manary’s alter ego dropped out of Radio Broadcasting College to pursue a lucrative career bartending at a seedy gentlemen’s club, played around stocking shelves at a small grocery store until he screwed up badly enough to be given a promotion, and finally left the glamorous life of fighting with Parmalat representatives over the quantity of soy milk required for a small Northern Ontario town to function adequately, for the bright lights of New York.

Wow that was one long sentence!

Manary is also a master of the run-on sentence, an abuser of commas, and has no idea how to properly use this bit of punctuation: “;”

He also thinks he is much “cleverer” than he probably is.

Manary is an award winning blogger, an erotic romance novel writer, the author of a pretty decent romantic comedy, and for a brief period in the early nineties served as dictator of a small South American country.

Most of that is true.

New York, New York, if you can make it there you can make it anywhere. Manary couldn’t make it there, and with only a little prompting from law enforcement agents returned to Canada, and chronicled the journey in that pretty decent romantic comedy mentioned in a paragraph above.

Manary is also an experimental artist who has no clue how to write an Author’s Bio, and definitely no idea how to end one.

He has only been in love once, and that didn’t work out so well, but he dreams and dreams of that girl he’s loved all along. Can a taste of love be so wrong?
P.S. He is also a shameless plunderer of pop culture.

As her investigation unfolds, Shelby finds death at every turn, and soon realizes she is in over her head. Can she escape from danger in time? Or will she find herself deep in death?

A twinge of pain burned through my arm, and I gently rubbed the spot where I’d been shot nearly three weeks ago. Getting a shot in the arm may sound like a simple thing for most people, but when it’s done by a bullet, it’s a whole different story. At least it was healing nicely, and the scar wasn’t too big, but every once in a while my arm ached like it had happened yesterday, probably because I was overdoing it again. After a few seconds the pain subsided, and I finished pulling on my shirt and got dressed.

Today was my first day back at work since the shooting, and I was ready to take on a new project. This time the job was a client from my consulting agency, which suited me just fine. My last job for Uncle Joey, the local mob-boss, had gotten me both arrested for murder and shot by a bullet in the arm, so I was a little nervous about doing anything for him again.

A few months ago I had to tell Uncle Joey my secret that I could read minds so he wouldn’t kill me. We’d worked out a compromise, and over the course of our association, we’d even become close. Crazy as it sounded, I’d started to think of him as my real uncle, even though he wasn’t. Since most of his errands seemed to get me into trouble, he’d also saved my life a few times. Well, to be honest, it was his hit-man, Ramos, doing most of the saving. But it was Uncle Joey who’d told him to watch out for me.

I sighed every time I thought of Ramos. He had a troubled past which only I knew about, and I’d helped him come to terms with it. Besides saving my life several times, there was also a physical attraction that I only dared admit out loud to my best friend, Holly. Of course after seeing him, she had a crush on him too, and since we were both happily married, I had to think it was all right. But with all of that going on, I had to wonder about myself. I mean, Uncle Joey was a big, bad mob-boss who had threatened to do me bodily harm, and Ramos was his hit-man. They were the bad guys and I had a soft spot in my heart for them. Was something wrong with me?

My husband, Chris, had no qualms about severing all ties with Uncle Joey, and it put me in a hard spot trying to please them both. But since the last job, things had changed. After I got shot, Chris had a long talk with Uncle Joey, and I hadn’t heard from him in three weeks. In some ways it was a relief, but in others, I kind of missed him…and Ramos…well…mostly Ramos. Still, I wasn’t about to call and offer my services. Not considering what had happened last time. Nope. I wasn’t ready to get shot again. In fact, I would be pretty happy if I never saw another gun in my life.

I took a deep cleansing breath and checked the time. I had an appointment with my client at ten this morning, and it was time to go. Her name was Tiffany and this was her senior year of college. Since I didn’t have a real office, I’d told her we could meet at the campus library in-between her classes, and with her busy schedule, meeting on campus worked out great for both of us.

I drove through town with my windows down and breathed in the crisp fall air. It was the first part of October and the sky was the perfect color of blue. The trees were just beginning to change into brilliant autumn colors, and framed against the blue sky, the pure beauty and serenity lifted my spirits. With everything I’d gone through lately, I knew I was lucky to be alive.

I parked at the visitor parking meters near the library and headed toward the front of the building. It had been several years since I’d been there last, and a wave of nostalgia washed over me. I’d only been to one year of college before I’d talked Chris into marrying me. It was love at first sight for me, but it had taken some gentle persuading on my part to help Chris see how perfect we were together. Right after our marriage, we’d gone off to law school in another state. Josh had been born exactly nine months later followed by Savannah two years after that. There were times when I regretted not finishing college back then, but I wouldn’t trade the life I had now for anything.

I loved my family and, as it turned out, I had a pretty good career without a degree, and I was proud of what I’d accomplished. Of course, if I hadn’t gotten shot in the head during a bank robbery, which left me with the ability to read minds, it might be a different story.

It was still hard for me to believe how my life had turned upside down simply because I’d stopped at the grocery store for some carrots. Who would have thought? Now I had my own consulting agency where I could get paid for helping people, and most of the time, all I had to do was read their minds. Not that it was always that easy, but after getting shot, I’d take some simple cases for a while.

A young woman sat on a bench near the fountain where we’d planned to meet. Her gaze caught mine and her eyes widened slightly before she recognized me. As I approached, she smiled and gave me a quick wave. She had long blond hair and a sweet face, but her somber eyes seemed out of place for someone her age, like she’d gone through some hard times.

Since she was a college student, I was a little nervous that she couldn’t afford my one-hundred-and-fifty-dollar-an-hour fee. But we’d talked about that before I agreed to meet her, and she’d seemed fine with it then. She stood to greet me.

“Shelby Nichols? Hi. I’m Tiffany Shaw. Thanks for meeting me.”

“Hi Tiffany, nice to meet you in person,” I answered.

“I know this is kind of informal, but it’s such a beautiful day. Do you mind staying out here in the sunshine?”

“I think that’s a great idea.”

“Good.” She resumed her seat on the bench and I sat beside her. She was thinking that she wasn’t sure how to start. What she needed might not even be possible, but she’d read about me in the paper and figured if anyone could help her, it was me. She’d been saving up for years to hire a private investigator and wanted the best. After a little digging, she’d heard rumors that I had premonitions. It didn’t faze her in the least. In fact, after all this time, she thought it might be the only thing that would solve the case. She just had to make sure her dad didn’t find out, since he was the over-protective sort. He’d tell her she was throwing away her money, and probably accuse me of taking advantage of her.

That certainly put a lot of pressure on me, and my stomach tightened with dread that her father would disapprove. But since she was thinking about not telling him, maybe he’d never need to find out. Considering her age and circumstances, I had hoped she’d hired me for something easy, like finding out if her roommate was after her boyfriend. But no, she was thinking about her mother, and that she was probably dead, and I knew nothing was ever as easy as I wished.

“I’d like to hire you to find my mother.” Her lips tightened and pain flashed through her eyes. “You see…I’m getting married in a few weeks and I really want her to be there.” She didn’t add ‘if she’s still alive’ like she was thinking.

She’d always imagined her mother would be at her wedding, and now that it was actually happening, she couldn’t stop wondering where her mom was and what had happened to her. The day her mother had gone missing was the worst day of her life, and thinking about it brought all the horror back, but she knew she would never move on unless she had some answers.

“Tell me what happened,” I said gently.

She took a deep breath. “It’s been nearly six years, and I know that’s a long time, but just hear me out before you decide if you can take the job or not.”

“Okay.” I encouraged her with a smile. “Go on.”

“Like I said…it will be six years on the twenty-eighth of October since she went missing. That night, she drove to the office where she worked to drop something off and never came back. They found her car parked in the parking structure with the keys in the ignition. Her purse was on the passenger seat. Nothing was taken, and there was no sign of a struggle. It was like she just disappeared off the face of the earth.”

“What did the police tell you?”

“Well…they dusted for prints, checked her office, put out a missing person’s report, questioned her colleagues at work, and brought my father in for questioning.” She hated that they had suspected him. He was innocent. He had nothing to do with it. He loved her mom. It still made her angry. It was part of what had made the day so bad. She not only lost her mother, but her father was never the same after that.

“What happened to your father? Did they charge him with anything?”

Tiffany shook her head. “No. They had no evidence that he was involved, but the police always suspect the husband first. So it was bad enough that my mom disappeared, but the fact that they thought my dad had something to do with it made it ten times worse.”

She sighed, wondering for the thousandth time what kind of person she would be right now if she still had her mom. She’d probably be a lot happier, that was for sure. “My dad’s doing better now. He even got married a couple of months ago.”

“That’s good,” I said.

“Yeah.” She was glad he had finally moved on, and wished it was something she could do. But the ache just wouldn’t go away, especially with her upcoming wedding. This was the most important day of her life, and her mother should be there. So where was she? What had happened? Who had taken her? Why hadn’t she come home?

In her heart, she knew her mother never would have left unless she was forced into it. Speculation from the police and others of affairs, with her mom running off with another man, only deepened the wound, and she wouldn’t believe any of it. That’s why a small part of her had to believe her mom was dead, but what if she wasn’t? What if someone was holding her captive? It could happen, and she just couldn’t give up until she knew for sure.

“What did the police decide about the case?” I asked.

“Officially, she’s missing and presumed dead. At least that’s what they declared so my dad could re-marry. I don’t know what happened to the case files. But I’m hoping you can dig them up and maybe find something that got passed over. I know it’s a long shot, but I’ve never had the resources to hire a private investigator until now. Do you think you could look into it for me?”

I bit my bottom lip. The chances of finding out what happened at this point were pretty slim. My mind-reading ability wouldn’t be of much use, although I could still question her dad. Even though she didn’t think it was him, I’d learned that some people were really good at keeping secrets, and I wasn’t about to rule him out. I could probably get my hands on the police file and talk to the detectives who handled the case, but beyond that, I didn’t have much hope.

goodreads_icon amazonbutton bnbutton

My ****4 Star**** Review

Meet the miracle girls: Ana, Zoe, Christine and Riley. This unlikely group is thrown together for a project during detention. Don’t get the wrong idea. These aren’t your typical troublemakers, but they each have circumstances which led them to this fate. The project is to write an essay about the day their life changed. After they’ve written their essays, they are then told they have to share them with their groups. None of them are interested in sharing, but then they’re notified that they won’t leave detention until they’ve done so. Upon sharing, they all learn that by some miracle, they all escaped a life and death situation. Zoe immediately feels that there’s some higher purpose as to why they’ve all been thrown together. Their group isn’t easily formed, though, especially considering a couple of the girls, Ana and Riley, appear to hate each other.

The story is written from Ana’s perspective, so you really get a good glimpse at all of her personal struggles. These struggles vary greatly, too. She’s new to the area and has zero friends. Her housekeeper and closest confidant has just been diagnosed with lupus. She’s a little obsessed with Tyler, lead singer of the Christian band Three Car Garage, but he doesn’t know she exists. Then there’s her overbearing parents, who have very strict rules and expect nothing less than perfection when it comes to school and looking forward to college. Oh, and don’t forget her role with the miracle girls, particularly her struggles with getting along with Riley.

Ana’s only a freshman and has a lot of growing up to do still. She comes off as a bit judgmental and self-righteous. She obsesses over Tyler for no reason other than his looks. She disregards Dave, bass player, for his looks, despite his amazing personality and interest in her. She also behaves like an airhead at times. Now these qualities would normally put me off in a main character, but it’s obvious that Ana is behaving in a manner typical to her age, and that she’s taking gradual steps in the right direction. Oh, and I couldn’t help but love her because she eats her Oreos and marshmallows the same way I do!

There’s a romance in the story, but this is sooo much more than a romance. This story is about learning some tough life lessons, forming the right kind of relationships, and honoring your parents even when you don’t agree with them. There are some very tense situations that arise, but you get to see Ana mature through them and learn some profound truths.

This story is perfect for younger adult females looking for a story with good morals! There is a romance, but it’s extremely clean. Hand holding is the extent of the physical aspect. There’s no foul language.

I picked up my copy on Amazon when it was being offered for free.

Review ~ Right-Hearted: Finding What’s Right With a Wrong-Sided Heart

Right-Hearted: Finding What’s Right With A Wrong Sided Heart, is a short memoir about my life-threatening heart conditions and an unforgettable girl. I was born with a broken heart. Literally. My heart is on the right side instead of the left. I was also born with 6 other random congenital heart defects, which have demanded that I undergo dangerous open-heart surgeries since my birth 16 years ago. After my last operation 3 years ago, at barely 14, I was sent away to live so that I would not kill myself. I spent 2 years learning to accept my heart conditions and learning to appreciate my beating heart. The blurry ambulance rides, countless surgeries, metal machines and two years in a Montana therapy school have all contributed to the unique teenager I am today.

I never knew anybody who completely understood my unique struggles until that night under the full moon.

Standing before the sky I had little idea my next two weeks would be overwhelmed with wild love, lust, confusion, tears and a beautiful girl. She and I would share the stories of our hearts…our right-sided hearts. Right-Hearted: Finding What’s Right With A Wrong Sided Heart is the story of two lustful teenagers who together confront their life-threatening conditions and learn to embrace their broken hearts.

My ***3 Star*** Review

*This review may seem to be spoilerish to some.*
Not having read the synopsis or anything else prior to reading this very short novella, I had no clue that this was a work of nonfiction. Had I known beforehand, I might have had different expectations, but I wouldn’t say vastly different.

This is a glimpse into sixteen year old Daniel and his life at one short point in time. Daniel has a condition called dextracardia. His heart is on the right side of his body rather than the left. He’s at boarding school and meets Chloe, a girl with the same condition. There seems to be an instant connection with her, but one that ultimately doesn’t go very far.

I think there’s a great foundation here. However, I would have enjoyed this a lot more if he would have slowed the story way down and given more intimate details that would have connected me to him and Chloe. He tells you what he’s feeling throughout, but I would have preferred him to show me, to make me feel what he was feeling. I even would have liked to know more about his boarding school situation as it related to better understand the circumstances in which he met with Chloe.

I’d be interested in reading more from Daniel and seeing how he progresses with his writing in the future. I purchased this novella on Amazon when it was being offered for free.

My ***3.5 Star*** Review

If you’ve read the title, then you know that this is just a novella that fits into a series. I picked up this novella because it was free on Amazon. That’s often a good way to see if I would enjoy a particular series. I often download numerous books a day and never really pay much attention to what they’re about until I go to read them. I’m a bookaholic and have an impossible time at saying no to a free book. Now, here’s the thing. I do most of my reading at night. I live out in the woods and I don’t have wi-fi, so when it’s the middle of the night and I finish a book, I just scroll to the next cover that catches my attention. It being the middle of the night, I don’t climb out of bed and do any research on the book first. So, I had no clue if this was a novella starting off a series or that fit in the middle of a series or what until the time I set out to write this review. I’m just giving you all this info to show you the perspective I had reading it.

This novella picks up at the rush of getting everyone ready to get the wedding started. Having not read the series, I thought this was a very unique place to start a novella. I’ve only read one other novella started this way.

You’re taken through Carly and Creighton’s ceremony, but really it’s all about feelings and anticipation of the wedding night. It is very apparent, however, that the couple is very much in love despite the focus being on Creighton making Carly his wife in more than name only. So, it was very sweet. I stress very sweet because despite this being about the anticipation of “sex”, this is a very clean novella. This couple is wed and they are in love. It’s a beautiful thing and no details are given.

As far as negatives go, there isn’t any sort of conflict or real point if you’re reading this as a stand-alone. It works as a stand-alone, but I would definitely read the first book in the series first, as this is truly just meant to be an addition to the ending of that book. Then there would be a point. Had I read the novel, I most likely would have given this 4 stars, but without it, 3.5.

I’m definitely interested in checking out the series!
I purchased this book on Amazon shortly after its release when it was free.

My ***3.5*** Star Review

Jena Shea is an up and coming lawyer. She’s working hard to bury her past in her work, and she’s doing a good job until tragedy strikes leaving her and her ex Chase both legal custodians of their niece Andrea. Chase has regretted letting Jena go from the very beginning, and he’s determined to fix things. But, there’s a few kinks in Chase’s plan aside from just getting Jena to trust him again.

For starters, Todd Richards has more than a working relationship in mind for Jena, and he’s not willing to take no for an answer. Plus, someone’s out to scare them, and it’s really looking like foul play as far as Jena’s sister’s disappearance. Just as Jena starts to put some trust in Chase, things really start to unravel and fear takes hold.

The author gives you both Jena and Chase’s perspectives in the story, which I appreciated. I liked Jena well enough, but I hated seeing her make stupid decisions or comments based on keeping the walls up around her heart. This was easily overlooked, though.

Chase, well, he was a rock star, but you couldn’t tell in the least. He was so laid back and would have happily given up music for eternity if that’s what it took to keep Jena and make her happy. Love and family were first in his eyes and that was always clear. He was NEVER scared to share his feelings. I don’t know how anyone could keep their heart blocked off from Chase.

Let me not forget the sassy and witty Mrs. R, housekeeper, friend, and gun-weilding power house. You couldn’t help but love her!

So, this book was great at encompassing a romance, mystery/ crime thriller all in one. While some parts were predictable, there were still plenty of things to keep you guessing alongside some real shockers.

Negatives? Well, there were several, hence the lower rating. Some things were just unrealistic. For instance, how would Jena and Chase have been so in love previously that he was about to propose before it all crashed, while she had no real clue about his music – had never even heard him sing? That just seemed crazy to me. Then there were these scenes that would have a build up to something and then would just end without and resolution. For instance, Chase kept making a big deal about getting Jena in a bikini to take her to the beach. It wasn’t just mentioned once or twice. There’s a whole scene about it. I expected the next scene to take place on the beach with her in a bikini, but all of a sudden we’re on a whole new day. There was also once where a scene seemed to repeat itself.

Have you ever read a romance where it comes down to both parties acting completely stupid, so the whole romance isn’t being resolved because they are acting like MORONS and it REALLY, REALLY starts to get on your nerves because the characters are acting so STUPID!!! Or, it’s a crime thriller, and you see the victim run right into the trouble when it was so painfully apparent that only bad things could come from their decision??? Well, that takes place in this book – both scenarios. I don’t know why, but that just drives me crazy, especially when it’s drug out. Being that it takes place so close the end, I’m sure that played a big role in knocking off some stars for me. I dont’ mind characters making stupid decisions – we all do sometimes. However, it gets really annoying to see it happen over and over!!

I also wasn’t happy with the ending as far as the crime went. I didn’t feel like justice was served as it should have been. On a side note, I wasn’t crazy about the cover, but that didn’t affect my opinion of the book.

Overall, it was a decent book and I really, really fell for Chase. There were times that his comical banter kept me glued to the pages. While there were things that annoyed me, even really bad sometimes, I still wanted to know what happened next. I’d recommend this to romance/crime lovers, especially those of you into hot musicians! This is Lisa’s first and only book out right now, so I’d encourage her to keep it up! Not bad at all for a newbie. I’m excited to see what she comes up with next as she improves her craft!

Warnings: mild language, sexual references – but no sex, violence
I got this book just a few days after its release on Amazon. I believe it was free at the time, and that’s why I had picked it up.

My ****4 Star**** Review

I was sucked in with the first sentence on this one, and it never let go.

You start out inside Charlie’s head. Charlie’s a senior and has just moved to a new school – AGAIN. She has little to no self-confidence and this stems from the atrocious parents she has. They aren’t physically abusive, but they have mental abuse down to an art. I normally hate a heroine with zero self worth, but in this case it is completely understandable and you feel for her immediately.

So, you follow Charlie to her first day of school where she bumps into Maverick, the school football star, quite literally. She’s mortified, but he’s feeling something all together different. You start getting rotating point of views from Charlie and Maverick. You get to see Charlie the way she sees herself, and Charlie the way Mav sees her – beautiful and amazing.

Charlie instantly falls for Mav but doesn’t see what he sees in her. She even tries to rush to the physical, but that’s where I truly fell in love with Mav. He stresses that he really wants her, but that she doesn’t need to prove anything to him through sex.

I also love that Charlie finds Tori. Tori becomes Charlie’s other encouraging force. So, the building up of Charlie doesn’t just come from a relationship with a guy. I also love that Charlie isn’t fixed overnight. It’s a gradual work taking place.

Then tragedy strikes and just when I think all is going to be okay…I was CRUSHED! I mean I was literally crying. But, it’s through all of this that Charlie truly learns to see herself clearly and that self worth isn’t measured by other people. If you want to know whether this has a happy or sad ending, read the next paragraph. I won’t give away the ending, but I know some of you just like to know if a book ends sad or happy. If you don’t want to know, just skip the next paragraph.

For those of you like me, that have to know, you get a happy ending. I really would have wished for even more of an ending, but you get more in book 2, which I can’t wait to read!

As for any negatives in the story ~ there were a couple times that their actions didn’t make sense, but it was always silly things like why did he go off his own way instead of walking her to class, which would have seemed the normal thing for high school guys. There’s also a bit of editing that needs to be done. Then there’s one other crazy thing that I really can’t even answer to why it is. I read this book a month ago. I usually don’t get to write my reviews as I finish my books due to my crazy schedule. I always keep all my notes, though, so I remember all I wanted to say. At the end of the book in my notes I wrote, “5 STARS!!!” So, why did I give it 4 stars then? Well, I had a hard time remembering the book. I mean a really hard time. After reading all my notes, I went and read other reviews trying to get a firm grasp on what happened in the story. It wasn’t until I slept on it that the whole story came back to me. It’s really crazy! I can’t believe that this book had me crying and then I struggled to remember it. I really don’t have a clue as to what was missing to make it memorable for me.

Back to the positives. Who would I recommend this, too? Well, anyone looking for a YA/NA encouraging story. Just keep in mind that this is only for mature YA. There’s strong language and there is that one time Charlie tries to push Mav to sex, but there is no sex and that scene doesn’t go very far. She puts his hand on her breast, and he stops it there although it’s apparent he has been affected – evidence in the crotch area. This is also for all you YA/NA romance lovers. I truly love that this is a romance, but soooo much more!! I can’t wait to read the next book, Heartstrings, which is already out and about Tori and Will, Mav’s best friend. You get glimpses at their relationship or lack of one throughout Love Notes, and it definitely leaves you wanting the whole story!

I purchased this book myself on Amazon. It was free at the time of purchase, and is still free as I currently write this.
