Review ~ The Giver ~ Books to Movies

The Giver poster

So, I went with my besties last night to see The Giver. Only two of us had read the book as far as comparisons go. Needless to say, we all really enjoyed it. While there were some differences, I think they managed to stay true to the message in the story. I’d highly recommend it to all fans of the book and to those that haven’t read it. There’s a short war scene with violence, but if your children can handle that then you’ll find it family friendly. Personally, I was the most grossed out seeing the fast, short clip of a zebra giving birth and watching the placenta fall out.

The Giver

Jonas’s world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

In conclusion, while I give the book 5 stars, the movie doesn’t fall far behind for me ~ 4.5 stars. Go see it and let me know what you think!

Happy Reading,

Alison

    • I love that! I try to do the same thing with my kids when I can. We weren’t able to squeeze this one in before the movie, but I love when we can. I have the book among other Lois Lowry novels, so I hope my kids can enjoy it soon. We read Number the Stars together last summer.
