Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath. Now she’s returned—to her old life, her family, her boyfriend—before she’s banished back to the underworld . . . this time forever. She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can’t find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.
Nikki longs to spend these precious months forgetting the Everneath and trying to reconnect with her boyfriend, Jack, the person most devastated by her disappearance—and the one person she loves more than anything. But there’s just one problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who enticed her to the Everneath in the first place, has followed Nikki home. Cole wants to take over the throne in the underworld and is convinced Nikki is the key to making it happen. And he’ll do whatever it takes to bring her back, this time as his queen.
As Nikki’s time on the Surface draws to a close and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she is forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole’s queen.
Everneath is a captivating story of love, loss, and immortality from debut author Brodi Ashton.
My ****4.5 Star**** Review
It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that brought mythology to life, but this one did! I was sucked right in from the get-go! It’s original and unpredictable.
Nikki has just spent time in the Underworld literally attached to Cole. All of her memories had been wiped, but she still saw a face of one particular boy that kept her going when most would have died. She’s been released, but she only has 6 months. 6 months to say goodbye to her family for good and to get her last real glimpses at Jack.
She’s expected to return to the Everneath. She either has to 1)agree to rule with Cole – living off of the energy of others or 2)become one whose energy feeds the Everneath. Neither option is good. The first one doesn’t sit right morally. The second, well, who wants to be drained of all their energy for eternity???
The story gives you two time periods. You get the 6 month time period leading up to Nikki’s return, and you get the time leading up to her first visit. You see that Nikki is a typical teen whose immaturity has put her in this position, but you see her slowly grow. Jack is crazy about her, but he has no clue what is really going on. Then there’s Cole. He adds loads to the story. He’s the evil bad boy, but he’s full of charm, and you sense that he really has feelings for Nikki, too. So, his character really adds to the story.
Overall, this is such an amazing debut for an author! I immediately ran to the library and picked up book 2, Everbound! I recommend Everneath to all fans of YA Fantasy/Romance! Oh, and don’t you just LOVE that cover!
