Love struck me at a young age. Bertie Cooper owned my heart from the second grade right up until the moment I ruined everything.

I didn’t deserve her, not after what I did, so I lied and pushed her away. I took the coward’s way out and I broke her heart. Little did I know, I sentenced the rest of my days to an internal prison of hell.

I now find myself at a crossroads with the blonde beauty before me once more. And she still takes my breath away. Life just keeps on torturing me…

I’ve never believed in second chances, but I’d give anything for one with her.
“The love of my life is right here willing to give me the world again, yet another man is threatening to take away everything I’ve fought so hard for.” ~ This quote sums up this book nicely for me. Cody was head over heels for Bertie since the second grade. Their story is one of second chances and first love never dying.
Bertie has fought hard for everything she has and she’s had to endure some really tough times. Cody has suffered long and hard at his own hands. He made a terrible mistake and just never overcame it. He just didn’t expect his path to lead him back to Bertie. And while Bertie has always held his heart, there’s a younger version of Bertie that wraps Cody quickly around her little finger.
This love story also takes a path into the thriller genre for a brief time and things get pretty scary. In all this you’ll find yourself falling for a little chihuahua, too.
Cody definitely made book boyfriend status as he showed some serious fight. He determined he was going to be there for Bertie whether she realized she needed it or not, and that’s what grabbed my heart. 4 stars!!

A full night’s sleep does a man good. Crisp clean sheets, an unsupervised hot shower, and overhearing Bertie tuck in her little Miss Cody, I feel complete. Can’t explain it away and end up having more questions than before. I listen to the two of them talk to a picture of Cody’s dad, and am left wondering.

The previous day’s events had drained me, leaving me no energy to stay up late into the night thinking everything through. As soon as my body landed on the mattress, I was out. Woke up to a note from Bertie at my bedside, telling me she ran Cody to school and would be back soon. A bottle of water and my morning pills are right next to it.

I shake my head at Bertie’s thoughtfulness. The woman’s heart is the biggest I’ve ever seen or come across. She’s something else. I down the pills then decide on another hot shower.

When I make it down to the living room, Bertie is perched on the couch with her legs crossed, messy bun scrunched on top of her head while she studies her computer screen. She nibbles on her bottom lip and twists her nose. There’s no denying something or someone is stressing her out.

HJ Bellus is a small-town girl who loves the art of storytelling. When not making readers laugh or cry, she’s a part-time livestock wrangler that can be found in the middle of Idaho, shot gunning a beer while listening to some Miranda Lambert on her Beats and rocking out in her boots.
