Title: Only a Breath Apart
Author: Katie McGarry
Release Date: Jan 22, 2019
Blurb: Bestselling author Katie McGarry’s trademark wrong-side-of-the-tracks romance is given a new twist in the gritty YA contemporary novel, Only a Breath Apart.

They say your destiny is carved in stone. But some destinies are meant to be broken.

The only curse Jesse Lachlin believes in is his grandmother’s will: in order to inherit his family farm he must win the approval of his childhood best friend, the girl he froze out his freshman year.

A fortuneteller tells Scarlett she’s psychic, but what is real is Scarlett’s father’s controlling attitude and the dark secrets at home. She may be able to escape, but only if she can rely on the one boy who broke her heart.

Each midnight meeting pushes Jesse and Scarlett to confront their secrets and their feelings, but as love blooms, the curse rears its ugly head…

“A gorgeous, heartfelt journey of redemption and love.” —New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins

Y’all, I just LOVED this book, and isn’t that cover super cute! This story is one of those that hooks you from the start and just won’t let you go! I couldn’t put this book down! It stayed by my side until it was done.

You will be taken on a realistic journey of what it’s like being in a family filled with physical abuse. The hope, the hate, the heartache. The control. The endless cycle. Your heart will hurt for Scarlett and all she and her family endure. It sends the right message to those that might find themselves in a similar situation. It inspires courage.

Then there’s Jesse, who has had to endure unspeakable trials himself. In this story he’s struggling with knowing himself aside from what his trials have made him.

I loved the strength of both Scarlett and Jesse and their weaknesses. They were real. Their personalities were never annoying and they made wise choices when you’d expect them to and they still acted like teens. They found strength in each other. But beyond that, the message in this story was them finding strength in themselves and then building their relationships off of that. 4.5 Very Strong Stars!

God teaches us forgiveness to help us realize that you aren’t responsible for someone else’s bad choices.

I recommend this to all lovers of YA romance!! While you can expect violence, this book is free of sex scenes and strong language. Kisses and cuddling are, however, included!

  1. This was also a hit for me, but then again, I have loved all McGarry’s books. My emotions were all over the place, but McGarry did such a good job with those difficult topics. I cannot wait to return to this world.

  3. I read a McGarry book years ago and enjoyed it but haven’t read any since. This sounds like one that I will have to add to my wishlist. Glad you enjoyed it!
