Lord of Shadows ~ Review

Title: Lord of Shadows
Series: The Dark Artifices #2
Author: Cassandra Clare
Release Date: May 23, 2017
Genres: YA Fantasy/Romance
Blurb: Would you trade your soul mate for your soul?

A Shadowhunter’s life is bound by duty. Constrained by honor. The word of a Shadowhunter is a solemn pledge, and no vow is more sacred than the vow that binds parabatai, warrior partners—sworn to fight together, die together, but never to fall in love.

Emma Carstairs has learned that the love she shares with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, isn’t just forbidden—it could destroy them both. She knows she should run from Julian. But how can she when the Blackthorns are threatened by enemies on all sides?

Their only hope is the Black Volume of the Dead, a spell book of terrible power. Everyone wants it. Only the Blackthorns can find it. Spurred on by a dark bargain with the Seelie Queen, Emma; her best friend, Cristina; and Mark and Julian Blackthorn journey into the Courts of Faerie, where glittering revels hide bloody danger and no promise can be trusted. Meanwhile, rising tension between Shadowhunters and Downworlders has produced the Cohort, an extremist group of Shadowhunters dedicated to registering Downworlders and “unsuitable” Nephilim. They’ll do anything in their power to expose Julian’s secrets and take the Los Angeles Institute for their own.

When Downworlders turn against the Clave, a new threat rises in the form of the Lord of Shadows—the Unseelie King, who sends his greatest warriors to slaughter those with Blackthorn blood and seize the Black Volume. As dangers close in, Julian devises a risky scheme that depends on the cooperation of an unpredictable enemy. But success may come with a price he and Emma cannot even imagine, one that will bring with it a reckoning of blood that could have repercussions for everyone and everything they hold dear.

*****My Review (or more accurately my reaction)*****

Oh my gosh!!! I want to scream! That ending!! Thank God I don’t have to wait on the next book, or I’m afraid I might have had to hunt Cassandra Clare down!! WHY!!!! Why would you do that???

And why is Julian just getting worse??? Did that ending have to happen to fix things?? Because honestly, I’m just really scared that things are going to get even worse!!

I have to hand it to Clare, though. She can pack a serious punch! I don’t think I’ve had such a reaction to an ending in quite a while. I’ve already picked up the next book, but honestly I’m just freaking out a little at the moment. I feel like I need a smoke break, and I don’t smoke.

Okay, so if you don’t know how I feel about Clare’s writing, you can check out my review of Lady Midnight. I don’t feel the need to reiterate what I’ve already said about her writing and this series. This book is just more, but there’s been one serious thing concerning me. Julian. His character. I LOVE this boy, but there are some serious flaws in his character that I need rectified! So, I’m going to say that as far as the writing goes, this is a solid 5 stars. As far as my enjoyment, 4 stars. And this is just because of Julian’s character and that ending. And honestly, this will be totally dependent on the final book. That’s the way it is with series sometimes. I need to know where the next book is headed to know 100% how I’ll feel about this one. So, for now, overall, I give it 4.5 Stars.

Happy Reading,

Alison
