Mercy by Debra Anastasia Review

I am getting another review up for y’all today. Yay! It always feels like a win for me to get these suckers posted. I don’t know why, but it can be a real struggle to get my feelings about a book written down.

He taught me to kill. Murder is in my blood now. It runs through my veins and though I hide the monster I see in the mirror with ink, it doesn’t keep him from coming out.

My street name is Mercy, but I never show any. Except for her. I watch Becca, though she doesn’t know. She saved me a long time ago; the day my father killed my mother. Her bravery turned her into a target.

My father holds a grudge and knife with the same proficiency, and Becca is the focus of his hatred. And I’m the only monster who can save her.

I’ll start by saying that I absolutely adored this book and its cinnamon roll, stalker hero. If you loved obsessed heroes, then I suggest giving Mercy a try!

Characters ~ We get first person povs of both our hero and heroine.

Fenix “Nix” “Mercy” ~ I’ve seen several people describe Nix as a cinnamon roll stalker/assassin, and I’d have to agree. Nix is haunted by his past to the point of obsession. He watched his father beat his mother to death, and he has to battle the guilt and pain from that. He was only a child, but he hates that he didn’t stop it. And his body is full of scars revealing the abuse he survived. Nix is now covered in tattoos from head to toe. He was the spitting image of his father and he couldn’t endure that.

Now most of his life is spent protecting a couple girls: his half-sister and the girl who saved him as a child. He’s become completely obsessed with the latter.

Rebecca “Becca” Dixie Styles ~ Becca is a bartender/waitress at the bar Meme’s. Her mother is overbearing and always trying to push a husband on her. But, now her mom has cancer. Becca has her best friend on her side, but overall, she lives a bit of a lonely life without much direction.

Side Characters ~ There are multiple side characters that play a role in the plot. Animal is Nix’s best friend since childhood, and he has his back, He’d die for Nix. He’s a big burly dude that’s also a cinnamon roll. He always sees what Nix needs and guides him in the right direction. He also gives Nix the pushes he needs. He’s Nix’s found family.

Becca’s bff and co-worker is always there for her along with her boyfriend that happily has Becca’s back, too.

Then there’s the other two girls that Nix stalks. One if from the beginning – Ember, his half-sister. The other is Christina, a little girl he rescues from kidnappers that falls in love with him despite the fact that his entire body is tattooed as a skeleton.

There are also a few others that play some important roles in the plot, including our villains.

Plot ~

The book starts off with a flashback of the day that Nix meets Becca. His father has just killed his mother and is now traipsing Nix through a grocery store. Things happen that cause Becca to stand up to Nix’s father for hurting him. She fights for Nix until her own father calls out her name and forces her to leave them alone.

Both Nix and his father latch onto that name. Nix continues to hear his father mutter that name and knows as he grows older that he’ll have to find a way to protect her.

Now as an adult, Nix is a serious hacker, and he takes all sorts of dangerous jobs include rescuing children from the mafia. Nix finds himself getting caught up in some serious issues after one man in particular is trying to force him onto his payroll permanently.

Setting ~

The settings for always well described and even often important to the plot. My favorite setting, though, is Meme’s while they’re celebrating the Day of the Dead (even if it isn’t anywhere near that time of year) making it possible for Nix to feel comfortable enough to go out in public.

The Romance ~

Nix has been completely obsessed with Becca since childhood. He stalks her relentlessly and feels like he knows her completely. When she latches onto him at Meme’s it just seems to blow his mind. Even the touch of her hand is more than he can deal with rationally. She’s the best dream he could have imagined, and she’s touching him. Just a peck on the cheek sends him into a stupor.

But Nix is also super strong and protective and that’s what Becca is needing when she meets him. She feels an insane chemistry and connection to him, and she’s sure she knows him from somewhere. She quickly learns that he’s been doing at least some low-level stalking. But, she keeps finding ways to excuse his behavior. She feels like she needs him.

And when the big grand gesture of the book is made and it literally brings Nix to his knees. SWOON! I LOVED it.

There’s no cheating or triangles in this story. There are a couple other guys that come into play, but there’s never any real contest between them. This book works as a standalone with an HEA.

The Writing ~

I was addicted to their story from the start. The pacing never slowed down for me. I was consumed by Nix’s heart and hurt. The only thing I didn’t love was that the third act break up included a long separation. I’m just not a fan of those. But, I completely enjoyed Anastasia’s writing style, and I definitely want to read more!

Overall, Nix completely had my heart in this book. I loved every piece of his broken and messed up life. He could never be normal, but he was so worth loving.

4.5 Stars

I’ve read a couple different stalker romances lately, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them. Have a rec for me?

Happy Reading,
