Sweet Liar ~ Release Day & Review

sweet

Sometimes lies are sweeter than the truth.

Beauty is alluring; it can disguise the ugliness beneath. But scarred beauty is even more potent to a girl who vowed never to let her heart be broken again. It was an easy vow for Candy to keep until she met Jonah, an arrogant boy with a face that would be too perfect if not for the scar that marred the skin beside his eye.

That imperfect boy earned her trust and won her heart, but the ties that bind people together are fragile, especially when lies are told. Trust is also fragile, and once broken, doesn’t heal like a heart. Trust has to be earned again, and Jonah desperately wants Candy’s trust back.

But Candy has more than Jonah to worry about. Her father is in trouble, and she intends to help him whether he likes it or not. People tell her he’s a bad man, and that may be true, but he’s not all bad. Deep down, she understands his brand of badness because she’s so much like him.

When Candy finally learns the truth, she’ll have to grow up fast, let go of old grievances, and realize that being vulnerable doesn’t make her weak. In fact, opening herself up may be the very thing that makes her whole again.

My 4 Strong Stars Review

If you haven’t already read Like Candy, then please go HERE to check out the first book in the series. This review will contain spoilers if you haven’t already read the first book. 🙂 This is such a unique series. There aren’t many YA romantic thrillers out there.

So, I was only 20% in when I encountered my first shocker of the book. The first of several things to come that I didn’t foresee. This story is full of little twists and turns. I got all of the answers I was looking for from book one – What exactly is her father involved in? Is he guilty of a crime? If so, was there a good reason? What is Jonah’s involvement? And his father’s? Yep, but I’m not going to reveal any of those here.

I will say that Candy’s search for these answers will leave you madly flipping pages. There are some very intense, heart-pounding moments in this book. There are some comical moments and sweet moments mixed in, too. The nervous energy is always palpable, though, as you know there’s at least one man out to do Candy harm.

Ultimately, I quite enjoyed this series. I would absolutely read it if Debra decided to write more on it. By the end of the book you will have all the answers you were originally looking for, but you’ll still be left wanting more. Fans of contemporary YA, romance, and crime thrillers will find this a great blend of the three!

Title: Gone Girl

Author: Gillian Flynn

Publication Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Genre: Contemporary Adult Fiction/Mystery/Suspense

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media–as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents–the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter–but is he really a killer?
As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?

My ****4 Star**** Review

So, I have to confess that I was a little slow at getting into this one. However, I read it alongside a group of friends, and a couple of them devoured the book from page 1. I think it’s just a matter of personal preference. I want a hero/heroine. I want to connect with someone. This isn’t one of those books. But, if you’re a lover of “who done it” books, and you don’t need to feel faith in anyone, then this will probably be your book!

It is one giant mystery. I will say that it is highly probable that you will figure out who did it, too. But, it’s still not predictable. Even if you figure it out, you won’t have figured out the whole scenario, and you’ll still be impressed. I was, and I didn’t even really “like” the book. I can respect the writing and the story, though. I have to admit that even though I didn’t like the characters (because of their character, not lack of development), I still found myself at times flipping quickly through the pages to figure something out.

Wrapping this up, if you NEED hearts and flowers, then this isn’t for you. If you love a good crime mystery, then I highly suggest it! Would I read another Gillian Flynn? It’s certainly possible.

My ****4 Star**** Review

Wow. This was a twisted one! If you like dark and mysterious then this may be the book for you. If you like spinning psychological tales where you can’t tell who the bad guy is or what’s really happening, then this may be for you.

I have to confess that I put this book down almost half way through, and didn’t pick it back up for quite a while. I couldn’t see where it was going and it was driving me crazy. I actually took a peak at the ending to see if I liked where it was going and determined I didn’t.

Well, after reading a review for the most recent book in the series, I realized I didn’t at all know where the story was going. The end of book one was misleading. So, I decided to give it another try.

Turns out I had put the book down right before things started getting interesting. And that ending? Well, I had COMPLETELY misinterpreted it because there were key details I didn’t know yet.

Am I happy I picked it back up? Yes. Will I continue with the series? Maybe. Okay, probably. It’s not one where I’m dying to know what’s next, but I’m definitely intrigued. I’m just not sure if I can handle the mind assault at this moment.

*****************************************

I’ve been reading a LOT of books like this lately – books where you just can’t figure out what on earth is going on. The Nocte series, Mud Vein, and Never,Never. I’m sure I can add more to the list, but these are all books I’ve read this year. This seems to be a growing trend, and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. I’m one to flip to the end because I’m dying to know if things will work out okay, and in these books, things aren’t always okay. I can handle that every now and then, but I feel like my mind needs a break – like I need to get lost in a sappy love story where everything is hunky dory. That’s hilarious, because usually those are boring….

Happy Reading,

My *****5 Star***** Review

I love you and hate you, Tarryn Fisher!!

Oh, my gosh!!! This book was maddening from start to finish! Tarryn leads you on to then leave you second guessing yourself. Then you’ll think you have it figured out again only to second guess yourself. But, wait! It might be – NOPE! Wrong again! And on and on and on and on and on…

Will there be a happy ending or horrific deaths? Is this a love story or not. Who will be destroyed in all of this? Will people be changed for the better or worse?

WHO IS BEHIND ALL OF THIS?!? Is it him? Is it her? Is it a stalker? WHO IS IT?!?

These questions will drive you completely INSANE!!! You’ll be on the edge of your seat WAITING, DYING for something to happen – ANYTHING to happen. But, you’ll just continue to be driven through the slow and painful torture. It is MADDENING!

So, I say this book is definitely NOT for everyone. But, if what I described sounds like your cup of tea, then by all means have at it!

Anyway…love and coke. The consequences for both are expensive: you get a mighty fine high, then you come barreling down, regretting every hour you spent reveling in something so dangerous. But you go back for more. You always go back for more.

Note from Shelley Coriell

When I was five or six, I got out of bed one night to get a drink of water. As I walked by the living room where my mom and dad were watching TV, a woman on the screen was clawing her way out of an earthen grave. The sight of that mud-covered hand and sound of her choked breathing left me frozen with fear.
For years I had nightmares about being buried alive. I’d wake up cold and shaking and gasping for air. To this day, I fear not being able to breathe. So of course I wrote a book about it!
In THE BURIED, Grace Courtemanche—an ambitious, successful state prosecutor—is pulled into a world of terror and self-doubt when she receives calls from victims buried alive, and she must turn to the one man she swore she’d never need again, Hatch Hatcher, a rootless, smooth-talking FBI crisis negotiator in town to deal with a long-buried secret of his own.
Grace and Hatch’s story, book #2 in the Apostles Series featuring Parker Lord’s elite FBI team, was a tough one for me to write. I actually had to set it aside for two years because it was too dark. But when I finally figured out what the story was really about—family—I found my light, and even a bit of laughter, to balance all that dark.
I can’t wait for readers to join me for another dark and twisty but ultimately uplifting story of hope and the healing power of family.

Excerpt from THE BURIED by Shelley Coriell (On sale October 28, 2014)

As the bay of hounds tapered off, the huddle of men and women in the parking lot broke, moving swiftly. Hatch, on the other hand, moseyed to her side, his gait slow and easy, but there was nothing conciliatory in his eyes. “You should have told me.” His mouth and jaw barely moved as he spoke.
She tried to ease away, but he moved with her. “Told you what?”
“Hmmmmm, where should I start?” With his free hand, he jammed a finger in the air. “One, you received threats from a convicted felon. Two, you received nine phone calls from a girl presumably buried alive. And three, as we speak, a forensic team is sifting through dirt in your backyard looking for human bones.”
“It’s none of your business.”
“Oh, Princess. Dear, dear Princess.” He moved closer, a big, graceful, golden cat. He stopped a hairsbreadth from touching her, but the heat of his skin warmed her, nipping at the chill that had set in yesterday with Lia’s phone calls. When he spoke, his breath fanned her face in a low, rumbling half-purr, half-growl. “You have been and always will be my business.”
The words, the closeness, so Hatch. For a moment, she considered sinking into his strength and warmth, which proved how deeply rattled she was by the past twenty-four hours.
Hatch didn’t seem to notice the crazy thoughts flitting around her brain. He grabbed her elbow and led her toward a sheriff’s department SUV.
“I’m not going home.” Her boots dug into the damp earth.
Hatch opened the SUV’s passenger door. “I wouldn’t dare suggest it.”
“I’m involved in this.”
“That’s obvious.” He pointed to the seat.
“Where are we going?”
“Into the swamp to search for Lia Grant. Together.”
The humid air had left her hair a riot of waves, and she jammed a wayward curl behind her right ear. Together wasn’t hard for her. She was a team player when she had to be, and Lia Grant needed the biggest team they could muster, and frankly, Hatch was on a winning team. She’d be an idiot not to ally herself with him. She hopped in the SUV. “Where to?”
He reached into his pocket and took out a coin. “Call it in the air?”
“Wait! You’re going to let a coin toss determine our course of direction, which could very well determine if a girl lives or dies?”
Hatch fingered the coin. “Do you have a better plan?”
“Surely there’s a more systematic way to handle this. What does Agent MacGregor recommend?”
An enigmatic smile tugged at Hatch’s mouth. “Like all of us on Parker’s team, Jonny Mac understands the value of a good coin toss.” Hatch tossed the coin in the air, adding. “Heads we go right, tails, left.”
She snatched the coin in mid-air. Decades of tennis had done wonders for her hand/eye coordination. “I don’t think so.”
Hatch swept his hands at the dense forest stretching out behind the bait shop. “Fine, Princess. Lead and I shall follow.”
Grace cradled the coin in her palm. She’d already played the phone messages from Lia, listening for ambient sounds, ideally something like a jet plane, which could be tracked. But in all of the voicemails, she’d heard nothing but Lia’s increasingly desperate words.
I’m in a bad place, a really bad place.
A hand settled on her knee. Golden and steady. This was not Hatch her ex-husband but Hatch the Apostle. Hatch who was a master in a crisis situation. She ran her thumb over the face of the coin, and with quirked lips tossed it in the air. The coin spun and fell on the ground between them.
“Left.” Hatch pocketed the coin and with a seriousness she’d never seen from him, climbed into the SUV and drove into the swamp to find a girl who’d been buried alive.

My ***3.5*** Star Review

Jena Shea is an up and coming lawyer. She’s working hard to bury her past in her work, and she’s doing a good job until tragedy strikes leaving her and her ex Chase both legal custodians of their niece Andrea. Chase has regretted letting Jena go from the very beginning, and he’s determined to fix things. But, there’s a few kinks in Chase’s plan aside from just getting Jena to trust him again.

For starters, Todd Richards has more than a working relationship in mind for Jena, and he’s not willing to take no for an answer. Plus, someone’s out to scare them, and it’s really looking like foul play as far as Jena’s sister’s disappearance. Just as Jena starts to put some trust in Chase, things really start to unravel and fear takes hold.

The author gives you both Jena and Chase’s perspectives in the story, which I appreciated. I liked Jena well enough, but I hated seeing her make stupid decisions or comments based on keeping the walls up around her heart. This was easily overlooked, though.

Chase, well, he was a rock star, but you couldn’t tell in the least. He was so laid back and would have happily given up music for eternity if that’s what it took to keep Jena and make her happy. Love and family were first in his eyes and that was always clear. He was NEVER scared to share his feelings. I don’t know how anyone could keep their heart blocked off from Chase.

Let me not forget the sassy and witty Mrs. R, housekeeper, friend, and gun-weilding power house. You couldn’t help but love her!

So, this book was great at encompassing a romance, mystery/ crime thriller all in one. While some parts were predictable, there were still plenty of things to keep you guessing alongside some real shockers.

Negatives? Well, there were several, hence the lower rating. Some things were just unrealistic. For instance, how would Jena and Chase have been so in love previously that he was about to propose before it all crashed, while she had no real clue about his music – had never even heard him sing? That just seemed crazy to me. Then there were these scenes that would have a build up to something and then would just end without and resolution. For instance, Chase kept making a big deal about getting Jena in a bikini to take her to the beach. It wasn’t just mentioned once or twice. There’s a whole scene about it. I expected the next scene to take place on the beach with her in a bikini, but all of a sudden we’re on a whole new day. There was also once where a scene seemed to repeat itself.

Have you ever read a romance where it comes down to both parties acting completely stupid, so the whole romance isn’t being resolved because they are acting like MORONS and it REALLY, REALLY starts to get on your nerves because the characters are acting so STUPID!!! Or, it’s a crime thriller, and you see the victim run right into the trouble when it was so painfully apparent that only bad things could come from their decision??? Well, that takes place in this book – both scenarios. I don’t know why, but that just drives me crazy, especially when it’s drug out. Being that it takes place so close the end, I’m sure that played a big role in knocking off some stars for me. I dont’ mind characters making stupid decisions – we all do sometimes. However, it gets really annoying to see it happen over and over!!

I also wasn’t happy with the ending as far as the crime went. I didn’t feel like justice was served as it should have been. On a side note, I wasn’t crazy about the cover, but that didn’t affect my opinion of the book.

Overall, it was a decent book and I really, really fell for Chase. There were times that his comical banter kept me glued to the pages. While there were things that annoyed me, even really bad sometimes, I still wanted to know what happened next. I’d recommend this to romance/crime lovers, especially those of you into hot musicians! This is Lisa’s first and only book out right now, so I’d encourage her to keep it up! Not bad at all for a newbie. I’m excited to see what she comes up with next as she improves her craft!

Warnings: mild language, sexual references – but no sex, violence

Excerpt

When she arrived at the little facility her building provided, a quick look around confirmed she was the only one there. Just as she’d hoped, and exactly how she liked it to be. Smiling in satisfaction, she flipped on the television that was perched on the wall, and turned up the music on her iPod as loud as she could handle it. The multiple distractions would help her get through the extra mile she was planning to conquer. With chilled water bottle in place, she cranked up the treadmill to a nice brisk pace.

As her breathing picked up speed and her muscles began to warm, Ana’s eye caught a red flash along the bottom of the screen. Breaking News filled the bar, and the too-chipper-for-their-own-good reporters were suddenly getting serious. Since the volume was still muted, Ana couldn’t understand exactly what was going on, only that they were showing the wide stretch of river that ran along the outskirts of the city. She wiped the first beads of sweat from her brow, and used the remote to turn the volume of the television higher while simultaneously adjusting her music.

As the reporters spoke, home-video footage of something floating in the water rolled before her eyes. The camera zoomed in, the frame ever so shaky, and it became clearly apparent that the “something” was a person – face down with long brown hair spread out like a Catholic halo. It appeared another victim had been pulled out of the water; the count was quickly tallying up. A young woman this time, and possibly one who had gone missing the night before.

Ana’s pulse skipped a few beats as they replayed the video over and over. There was something familiar about the long, lean body. Slowing the treadmill to a stop, she ripped the ear buds from her head to give the segment her entire attention.

…it appears at first glance that the victim suffered from a deep cut to the throat, and received multiple stab wounds to the chest…

The beads of accumulated sweat turned cold on Ana’s brow. She immediately reached for her phone and dialed Kylie’s number.

“What the hell, Ana?” Came her friend’s groggy voice.

“Turn your TV on. Channel four. Hurry.” Ana said, eyes transfixed to the screen in front of her. “Recognize that face?”

…It’s thought the victim may be one of the young girls recently reported missing. The screen flashed candids of three possible women. All brunettes. All tall and thin. All roughly the same age. Among them was a photo of Mara, just as Ana had expected there would be.

But the body was too bloated and disfigured to be absolutely certain, and an autopsy would be needed.

… The body will be taken in for processing where officials hope to shed more light on the case in the near future. In the mean time, they’re cautioning residents to avoid….

“Did you see that?” Ana’s voice escaped in more of a demand than a question. “Please tell me I’m seeing things.”

“Oh my god…” Kylie whispered into the receiver, confirming the dread that was building in Ana’s stomach. “Do you really think it’s her?”

“I know for a fact it is.” Ana declared, the pull in her gut getting stronger by the minute. “The autopsy will confirm it.”

“So, what does this mean exactly now?”

“That maybe I should have been listening a little closer when I was talking to Mara.” She said with regret as she swiped her forehead with the back of her hand. “And maybe I should have asked more questions. There’s a story here, I’m sure of it now.”

“What are you going to do?” Kylie’s voice was decidedly more alert now.

Ana shook her head. “I have no idea.”

Though if she were to be truthful with herself in that moment, she’d already made up her mind. Ana flipped off the television, and left the little gym to get started.

My ****4 STAR**** Review

So, it’s been a while since I’ve read a good crime thriller. This had all the things that I think make one great. The plot was full of things to keep you guessing. It wasn’t predictable and the characters were well-developed. Plus, there’s a good romance built in, which makes almost any story better if you ask me.

The story revolves around Kate. I admired her strength through all she had endured. I really appreciated that she wasn’t another weak personality. I also enjoyed her friend Smokey Joe immensely. He may be old and blind, but boy was he a fighter!! Then there’s Agent Hayden Reed – Mr. Clean Cut. Yummy! I loved that he had the whole put together tough guy thing going and then the hard to get to soft guy. But, most of all I loved his protective nature.

The sexual tension between Kate and Hayden was often palpable, and I was definitely pulling for them the whole way through. I will have to admit that there were a few times that their actions seemed a little rushed towards each other. I know when you’re involved in some high intensity stuff, it’ll often lead to a rushed relationship, but it still felt just a little weird a few times for me. This wasn’t the overall feel of their relationship, though. Throughout the majority of the book I found myself laughing with them and cheering them on!

Let me not forget the bad guy. In truth, I have to say bad guys. I’m not giving anything away here, so don’t make ANY assumptions on what I just said or you’ll be confusing yourself! So, needless to say, the bad guys were just SICK. You’ll encounter some rather gruesome and downright disgusting things in this story. I would NOT recommend it for the faint of heart. I know for me one of the hardest things to read about in a book is rape, especially of a child. I’ll say here that this is talked about but not described, in case this is an issue for you. Nonetheless, expect to encounter some violent scenes, and of course there’s strong language, too.

As far as the plot goes, I only found it to drag a little bit about 20% in for a short bit. I know the foundation of the story was still being laid, and it wasn’t a big drag. This really says a lot for me. I often find crime thrillers to drag a LOT, but that wasn’t the case here. This book keeps you on your toes.

Overall, this is a story of hope. I liked that it had a strong underlying theme. I really enjoyed it and I definitely look forward to reading more of Shelley Coriell’s books!! I recommend this to all of you crime thriller lovers out there, especially if you’re one that likes a good romance mixed in. Just remember – not for the faint of heart! An easy 4 stars!

Excerpt

If Anne had ever felt Montgomery blood course through her veins it was in that moment. Every cell boiled beneath her skin. Murder was the only thought in her mind—severe, merciless murder. The kind that would tantalize viewers to gawk at their television screens as helicopters flew over the grotesque scene as a dismembered body was rolled into the back of a black windowless van. The headline would read, “Wife attacked psychotic drug-addicted husband.” And won.

Anne’s emotion paralyzed as did her muscles. She knew fear. Experienced loss, anger, and hatred, tasted betrayal and revenge. What skimmed along her reasoning was new. Darker than anything she had ever felt before. The smell of death burned her nostrils and blood seeped into the floor like crimson polish.

In the early morning hours, as Anne slept in Adam’s arms, Carter had invaded the house, cut out another piece of her sanity and then vanished into the night. Carter was the phantom in children’s bedtime stories. The monster that could slip through the shadows, steal souls and taint dreams. Carter was not only Anne’s husband, but also her nightmare.

Bites pricked her heart the longer she stared at Robert’s executed body. Anne’s vision blurred and moved and at times tricked her mind into seeing movement from him but he was dead. Robert was dead. Carter had invaded Michael’s home to make a statement. He would never let Anne go.

About the Author ~ Andrea Johnson Beck

Andrea Beck

Andrea was born a Midwestern girl, grew up in Iowa and South Dakota. She came out of the womb writing, her parents have recorded evidence of Andrea’s whimsical imagination. She has had many poems and short stories published over the years, even did free verse sessions at a local coffee shop but there aren’t any recorded evidence of that. Andrea is thankful for the lack of technology in the 90’s.

After twenty-nine trips around the sun, she decided it was time to sit down and write her first book. And, she did. Two weeks before her 30th birthday, Andrea completed, Deadly Deception. Sadly, it sat in her laptop for two years before she decided to self-publish in November 2012.

Montlake Romance loved Deadly Deception and Deadly Redemption so much, they wanted them and their author. Andrea and Montlake Romance decided to interweave the two stories into one novel. The “new” Deadly Deception released October 8th, 2013. The 2nd book in the series, Deadly Revelation, released April 8th, 2014.

Andrea resides in North Carolina with her quirky family, where she homeschools her son and writes about the craziness that pours from her mind. Her son, Logan, has caught the writing bug. He talks about being on the Autism Spectrum and homeschooling at his very own blog, The Quirky Mustache. Logan has touched many lives and is her hero.
