Title: Obsession

Series: Stand alone spin-off of Lux series

Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Release Date: May 31, 2013

Genre: Paranormal/Sci-fi Romance

This is a stand alone novel that is an adult spin-off of the Lux Series You do not need to read a Lux book to read Obsession and vice versa.

He’s arrogant, domineering, and… To. Die. For.

Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.

Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something… unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.

Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life… or is it Hunter?

My ****4 Star**** Review

As you can pick up from the blurb, this is an ADULT(I’m talking lots of steaminess) stand alone spin-off from JLA’s Lux series. However, I highly recommend the WHOLE Lux series, and that you read this book right before the last book in the Lux series, Opposition.

So let’s talk Hunter. I can start with saying that if he was a real man, I’d be pressing some charges if I was Serena. BUT, somehow he still comes off as totally hot and sexy in the book. There were multiple places in the book that I was astounded at how I was still pulling for him.

Oh, but the sexual tension between the two of them is so very strong. It permeates the whole story, and I have to admit that there was a time or two where I wanted it to become less of the focus. When they do come together, though, it’s so very spicy!

Aside from that, I really enjoyed the little bit of parallel happening between this story and Origin. I liked getting another perspective about what was happening. Then of course there are clues for the final book in the Lux series.

So, this was a constant page turner for me, as is every other book I’ve read from Ms. Armentrout. No shocker there! If you’re into paranormal romance, then I couldn’t recommend this or her Lux series enough!

Happy Reading,

Alison

Title: Shadows

Series: Lux #0.5

Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Release Date: Feb. 21, 2012

Genre: YA Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

My ****4 Star**** Review

Not reading this book until way after I was fully in love with Daemon, I didn’t know how I would feel about Dawson. I knew I wanted the story, though. While I didn’t fall for Dawson like I did Daemon, I’m still so glad I took the time to read it.
It’s the type of story that I’m sure would leave any high school girl swooning. There are times that you’ll completely forget that you’re reading about aliens because the scenes are so very real, and so very reminiscent of falling in love for the first time.
I didn’t find myself emotionally invested in Dawson and Bethany’s story like I was with Daemon and Kat, but this book was still filled with some great scenes! I was surprised at the length of it, too. Usually when you get a .5 version of any series, its length is brief. JLA didn’t do that.
I definitely recommend this book to all fans of the Lux series, and if you haven’t already read any of it, WHY NOT?!?

Series: Death Collectors #2

Author: Jessica Sorensen

Release Date: Nov. 18, 2013

Genre: YA Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy

Until Asher Morgan came along, nineteen-year old Ember’s life had always been about death. Being around Asher, though, and being able to be near him and touch him, changed her and made her feel alive for the very first time. But now he’s gone and she’s left dealing with her seclusion again, the emptiness of not being able to be touched, and the curse of the Grim Angel.

As a battle breaks out between Angels and Reapers, she desperately searches for answers about who she is, where she came from, and what she needs to stop the battle. But things get complicated when Cameron returns to her life and begins messing with her thoughts and emotions.

Ember tries to hold onto her sanity while the line between life and death begins to blur. Lives are threatened and taken. Murder is everywhere. She needs to figure out what’s real, what’s an illusion, and who she really has feelings for before it’s too late.

My ****4 Star**** Review

I have to say that I’m not wholly in love with this series. I personally prefer her Fallen Star series. However, I still want to keep reading and get all the answers. I can’t even figure out who I want Ember to be with now. In the first book I was all about Asher, but now I don’t know. It’s sort of driving me crazy! If you’re into love triangles, then this might be the series for you! Then again, if you haven’t read the first book, then you probably need to stop here and go do that before reading this review. 🙂

I have to confess that some parts of the story came across as a little weird for me and some parts were confusing. I was able to get the overall idea, but sometimes the details were so great, and yet so new with it being a whole world building thing, that I couldn’t keep up.

I think the worst thing for me, though, is not connecting with the characters emotionally like I do in most of Jessica’s other books. So Asher is gone at the end of the first book, and let me just say that that makes the beginning of this book drag. I was at 51 % before I really got into the book. Because of that, I wavered between 3.5 and 4 stars for this book. The beginning half I would have been closer to 3 stars, but then I started getting really interested in where it was going. So, the second half of the book is redeeming. It does end on a cliffie, though, and with a major love triangle going on. I almost think I’m leaning towards the dark side now…Nonetheless, I want to know how it all ends! Spark, the next book, is set to be released on Mar. 31st.

Review ~ Deacon by Kristen Ashley

deacon

Deacon has an ugly history, a history that broke him, leaving him a ghost of a man. Out of necessity, he left the normal world to descend into the criminal world and found he fit. So he stayed. Cold as ice and living off the grid, Deacon has no intention to connect, not with anyone.

Then he returns to some remote cabins in the Colorado Mountains and finds they have new owners. One of them is Cassidy Swallow, a young woman willing to work hard to live her quiet dream in a house by a river surrounded by aspen and pine.

Suddenly, Deacon finds he’s at war. Cassidy’s pull for him to connect is strong. He fights it, but he loses, always coming back for more. But when he does, he gives her nothing.

From the first time she sees him, Cassidy knows Deacon is dead inside. She knows he’s the kind of man who could destroy a woman. But one night when Deacon’s control slips, Cassidy takes a chance.

He might break her. He also might be her dream come true.

My ****4 Star**** Review

So, this was my fourth book in this series. I’ve loved watching how all the characters are connected together, and yet have completely different personalities. However, this book fell just a little bit short of that mark for me. While I could still see a distinctness in Deacon and Cassidy, there were things that highly reminded me of Raid. Cassidy’s repetitive use of the word “sorry,” for instance, was definitely something Hanna used often. Then Deacon’s mannerisms in general often made me think of Creed. Forutunately, there was still enough that separted them to keep me interested. I really liked that Cassidy was both mild-mannered and sassy when she needed to be.
The setting was definitely unique, and I loved the story of how they come to cross paths to begin with. There are some funny moments, and some very sweet moments. Most of their moments could only be described as HOT, though. If you’re into bondage, then some of these scenes would be very pleasing to you! I only didn’t like that there were a couple places in the book that seemed too much about sex and seemed to be lacking in plot.
The story has a feel of completion, and yet could be considered cliffhangerish. There are definite questions left unanswered. Kristen definitely left several avenues for more possible books.
Overall, I liked the series, and I’m anxious to see how it compares to her other books being that these are the only Ashley books I’ve read. I hear I definitely need to read Motorcycle Man, so we’ll see…

About the Author ~ Kristen Ashley

Kristen

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn’t taken her first breath!).

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

My *****5 Star***** Review

Violet & Luke have touched my heart, and I am just at a loss for words. I don’t know what it is about Jessica’s trips on the dark side that I crave so much. I’m typically a happy person. I haven’t experienced any of the horrific things her characters do, but maybe that’s why I just want to love them into the light! My heart breaks, but then hope soars – EVERYTIME! The passion between the two of them is so strong you’ll be fanning yourself through the erotic scenes. Maybe it’s always the great connection she gives her characters that leaves me breathless.
Ugh! She is killing me with these cliffies, though. I’d be ready to throw a giant hissy fit if I actually had to wait on the next book! Again, I can’t stress enough that if you haven’t read this series, you NEED to!

Review ~ Mrs. Maddox: A Beautiful short story

beautiful walking disaster A Beautiful Wedding

As this is a short story, it has no cover. 😦 So, I’m sharing the covers to the rest of the series. Jamie wrote this just before her release of Walking Disaster. It’s a sweet super-mini story. It’s set on Valentine’s Day the year after they married. I have to admit that after reading A Beautiful Wedding, I was a little paranoid about reading it. A Beautiful Wedding was like a buzz kill to the warm sappy feelings I wanted Abby to have when marrying Travis. Anywhoo, this story only complemented them and showed how Travis is still crazy about Abby. Plus, it made Abby sound like she was pretty crazy about him in return. So, although this is super short, I was so very happy to have just a little taste of Travis and Pidge again! If you want to check out the story yourself, you can find it HERE.

That wraps up the Beautiful series for me! Be sure to drop by Sunday when I’ll be sharing about all the series I’ve wrapped up this year, and the progress I’ve made on other series.

I’d also love to hear what series you’re reading right now, or what series you would recommend!

Happy Reading,

Review ~ The Destiny of Violet & Luke

destiny

Title: The Destiny of Violet & Luke (The Coincidence #3)

Author: Jessica Sorensen

Release Date: Jan. 7, 2014

Genre: NA Contemporary Dark Romance

Luke Price’s life has always been about order, control, and acting tough on the outside. For Luke, meaningless relationships are a distraction-a way to tune out the twisted memories of his childhood. He desperately wishes he could forget his past, but it haunts him no matter what he does.

Violet Hayes has had a rough life. When she was young, she was left with no family and the memory of her parents’ unsolved murders. She grew up in foster homes, living with irresponsible parents, drugs, and neglect, and trying to fight the painful memories of the night her parents were taken from her. But it’s hard to forget when she never got closure-and she can’t stop dreaming about what happened that tragic night. To make it through life, she keeps her distance from everyone and never allows herself to feel anything.

Then Violet meets Luke. The two clash instantly, yet they can’t seem to stay away from each other. Although they fight it, they both start to open up and feel things they’ve never felt before. They discover just how similar they are. But they also discover something else: The past always catches up with you . . .

My ****4.5 Star**** Review

I am so glad Jessica decided to give us Violet & Luke’s story! I have been wanting to read this since she first mentioned writing it!
Oh, but it’s not an easy one to read. Luke and Violet both have extremely ugly pasts. Their story is painful to listen to, but one you can’t turn away from. And then they find in each other something that might make everything else disappear. There’s a horrible connection between them, though, that they are about to discover. Oh, and it’s so incredibly heartbreaking.
If you enjoy emotionally dark reads that have just enough goodness to give you hope, then this is the series for you! I’ve said it before. Jessica Sorensen knows just how to drag you into the dark with her characters. You will feel everything they are feeling, and you’ll have to remind yourself to breathe. Emotionally Gripping!!

Watch for my review of The Probability of Violet & Luke, book 4 in The Coincidence series this Friday!

5 STAR Review ~ Origin (Lux #4) @JLArmentrout

Release Date: Aug. 27,2013

YA/NA Paranormal/Sci-fi/Romance/Urban Fantasy

Daemon will do anything to get Katy back.

After the successful but disastrous raid on Mount Weather, he’s facing the impossible. Katy is gone. Taken. Everything becomes about finding her. Taking out anyone who stands in his way? Done. Burning down the whole world to save her? Gladly. Exposing his alien race to the world? With pleasure.

All Katy can do is survive.

Together, they can face anything.

But the most dangerous foe has been there all along, and when the truths are exposed and the lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on?

And will they even be together?

My *****5 STAR***** Review

OH. MY. GOSH. I cannot believe she went there, and I NEVER saw it coming! I mean she had me all gushing, I mean I was MELTING!!! and then WHAM! WHAT?!? Yes, she did! And I NEVER saw it coming! How did I NOT see it coming? Looking back I can see a bit of foreshadowing, but I still would have thought that there was NO FREAKIN’ WAY! Now I’m totally freaking out!!

Ok, let me go back to the beginning. If you read Opal then you know how that ended in totally dramatic fashion and made up for any flaws that book may have had. If you didn’t read Opal, then you shouldn’t be reading this unless you’re looking for spoilers of the previous books. My advice – GO READ THE BOOKS!!! Okay, so this book picks right up where Opal left off. It is action-packed from the start. There is NEVER a dull moment in this book. It’s one heart pounding moment after another.

Oh, but then there’s just a small little moment of peace that leaves you melting, melting, melting. No, not like the wicked witch. Trust me, you’ll be perfectly happy staying wrapped up in your ball of mush!

You won’t stay there. Nope. Ms. Armentrout apparently thought that would be BORING! So, insert more drama and some highly upsetting losses. Oh, but if your heart is hurting here, that isn’t even a smidgen of what you’ll feel in the end. Because, in the end you’ll be searching the floor for the scattered pieces of your heart everywhere.

MASTERPIECE. Oh, and I might add here that if I actually had to wait for the release of the next book, I might be ready to kill someone…

Go read the books!! There’s nothing more to say.

Warnings: There’s sex in this book, but it doesn’t head towards erotic. There’s some language, but its use is rare.

Happy Reading,

Alison

Title: Opal

Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Series: Lux #3

Genre: Sci-fi/NA/Romance

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger… and they know it.

My ****4.5 Star**** Review

The ending is what did it for me with this book. I honestly wasn’t feeling this book as much as the previous ones (although I still love the series as a whole), but the ending completely made up for the slow parts. I would be absolutely freaking out if I had to wait on the next book right now! I have to say that I’ve already read the next book, Origin, and it’s probably my favorite of the whole series, so keep reading if you’ve made it this far!

Don’t get me wrong either. This book didn’t suck. I just didn’t find myself as taken in on a whole. There are still some very exciting and intense moments. Kat faces some really big trials in this one. There’s also some heart-melting moments with Daemon. But, hey, almost all moments with Daemon are spectacular!

You can check out a little teaser from Opal HERE. I’ll be posting my review of Origin this Sunday, so be sure to check that out! I love to hear from other fans of the series!

Happy Reading,
