About the Author:

(From Goodreads)
I’m not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother’s knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.

Years later (no, I’m not admitting how many) I’m still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!

I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

Review ~ Connected by Kim Karr

Connected (Connections #1)Connected by Kim Karr
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

AHHH!!! I seriously have to wait until October?!?! Kim Karr, you are killing me!!

Okay, so let me start over, now that my little temper tantrum is out of the way. This is one of those books that just grabs you from the start. There’s nothing awesome happening (KEEP READING!!!), but there’s plenty to keep you intrigued. The book was smoothly paced from beginning to end, and I never felt like it was dragging at any point. Now, I must add here that I would have given this book a 4 star rating through the first half. I loved the “connection” between the two main characters, but I was left wanting a little bit more from them. Their sex life was amazing, but I wanted to feel that connection a little bit more outside of the bedroom (again…KEEP READING!!).

So, meet Dahlia, the female protagonist of the story. She’s a good-hearted girl who’s been through a lot. We’re talking about the death of a fiance and life-long friend. She struggles a while, but eventually pushes through – just in time for River to make his appearance (2nd appearance). Dahlia is one of those rare female leads that didn’t have me questioning everything she said and did. I really appreciated that about her. There was only one night that she seemed to overreact, but she was drinking, and regretted it in the morning. She felt real.

Next, meet River. Totally sweet & sexy!! He’s the perfect combination, too. He’s a complete sweetheart in every way, but yet, oh so completely male at the same time. AND, he’s completely in head-over-heels love with Dahlia. So in love, that he totally had me tearing up about 3/4 of the way through the book over a song he wrote for her. I NEVER cry happy tears in a book – EVER!! This was the point where I felt the “connection” so deeply that I had to ratchet up my review to 5 stars!! And, the book just kept getting better from there!

Now, let me not forget good old Ben. He was Dahlia’s life-long boyfriend, and ultimately her fiance, who managed to get himself killed over a story he was going to have published. Dahlia’s learning to say good-bye, but it seems there are still some really bad people out there that are looking for something Ben left behind. This whole situation eventually leads to some twists that may leave your head spinning and have you screaming at the end when you’re left with a cliffhanger. Torn, the final book of this duet is now the book I find myself most eagerly anicipating!! It seems I’m going to have to wait until OCTOBER!!!

EXCELLENT job Kim Karr!!!

Review ~ Moonstone by Marilee Brothers

MOONSTONE A Fictionwise Fantasy bestseller Young Adult A sickly mom. A tiny house trailer. High school bullies and snarky drama queens. Bad-guy dudes with charming smiles. Allie has problems. And then there’s that whole thing about fulfilling a magical prophecy and saving the world from evil. Geez. Welcome to the sad, funny, sometimes-scary world of fifteen-year-old Allie Emerson, who’s struggling to keep her and her mom’s act together in the small-town world of Peacock Flats, Washington. An electrical zap from a TV antenna sets off Allie’s weird psychic powers. The next thing she knows she’s being visited by a hippy-dippy guardian angel, and then her mysterious neighbor, the town “witch,” gives her an incredible moonstone pendant that has powers only a good-hearted “Star Seeker” is meant to command. “Who, me?” is Allie’s first reaction. But as sinister events begin to unfold, Allie realizes she’s got a destiny to live up to. If she can just survive everyday life, in the meantime.

Moonstone (Unbidden Magic, #1)Moonstone by Marilee Brothers
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I won a signed copy of this book, but I was in no way compensated for this review.

Moonstone is the first book in the Unbidden Magic Series. After reading it, I’d say it’s mostly appropriate for young teens. However, I immensely enjoyed it myself & I plan to read the series to my kids after I aquire the rest of the books – as long as they are as clean as the first. I know at least that my kids would love this first book.

The book starts out with young teenaged Alfreida Carlotta Emerson “Allie” trying to fix a TV antenna. She gets zapped in the process. It doesn’t take long for Allie to discover that something has changed about her. She has super powers that just weren’t there before.

Allie finds herself struggling with these newfound abilities, and turns to her quirky neighbor for help. Well, let’s face it here. This neighbor is more than just a neighbor. She plays a significant role in Allie’s life, since Allie’s father took off before she was even born, and Allie’s mother, well, let’s say Allie’s the adult in that relationship. Back to the neighbor, she is completely understanding of what Allie has been going through and tells Allie that it’s time for her to have something – a moonstone pendant. Allie is to keep it with her at all times, and it’s absolutely imperative that no one else gets their hands on it.

Of course, this whole deal just leaves Allie reeling. She really wants nothing to do with it. She wants her boring, dull life back, which is saying a lot. Allie lives in a travel trailer with her mom on her aunt and uncle’s property. Her aunt is disgusted that her husband is allowing them to mooch off of them. She goes so far as to turn to the CPS for help in getting rid of them. That would probably make sense, too, except at this point, Allie seems perfectly capable of taking care of herself for the most part. Allie’s great at taking care of her sorry excuse for a mom, too. That’s the kind of person Allie is, though. She even takes care of the local kids that are bullied at her school. She doesn’t back down from anyone.

It doesn’t take long for Allie to learn that people are willing to kill for this moonstone. Allie finds unexpected help in a boy, that becomes more than just a friend to her. Let me say here, that this boy is the very last boy you’d ever expect it to be. Allie finds that in order to save herself, and probably the world, that she’s going to have to embrace her own powers…

I thought the story flowed well from beginning to end. I was most intrigued with the character descriptions. Some of the characters had me laughing out loud. I can imagine my kids finding Blaster the Bull quite amusing! The relationships between the characters didn’t play out at all like I thought they would, and the story kept me on my toes.
I can’t wait to read the rest of this fun series!

About the Author:

(from the book cover)
Marilee Brothers is a former high school teacher turned full-time author. She married her college crush, and they have three sons. Marilee lives in Washington State, where she’s hard at work on more books…

I read a bunch of reviews about this book before writing my own. I like to see what others are saying about it, so that I can write up my own opinions on those topics. One thing I noticed about the reviews for this book was that even the people with negative reviews still thought others should at least give it a try. I thought that said a lot about this book!
