Book Trailer

Excerpt

Today was supposed to be one of the best days of my life; a day I would never forget.
Come to think of it, that last part’s true. I’ll never forget it for all the reasons that make you ache inside, the reasons that make you want to give up completely, the reasons that make you want to fold in on yourself like origami paper, folding in and over, making the shape smaller and smaller until you disappear into an infinitesimal dot. And because of this there’s only one thing I’m completely sure of in my soul—I must leave. Right now.
The glass doors glide open and I stomp through, legs weak and stomach hollow from crying my eyes out in the back of a taxicab. I make my way to the end of a winding line of people. Cheery faces turn when they see my big white dress and absurdly long lace train out of the corner of their eyes, but just as fast as their gaze settles in my direction,
ready to greet me with well wishes, it slides away with an obvious pinch of uncomfortable guilt. And honestly, I can’t
blame them.
“You can go ahead of me.” An older man’s voice wavers as he gestures nervously. With his shifting posture, I can tell
he’s trying not to look too closely, but with black mascara dripping down my cheeks, mixing with my face powder, red
lipstick, and peach blush, it’s clear that I’m a hot mess.
I make my way to the counter as each person in line shoos me forward in quick succession.
“May I help you?” The airline agent greets me with an unsure smile.
“I really hope so.” I place my handbag on the counter, unzip it, and riffle through the contents as I continue to talk. “I need a ticket for the first plane out of here.”
From the edge of my vision, I see that there’s a moment of pause on her end, no typing, and no rushing to help, so I
look up. The woman purses her lips as if she doesn’t believe me.
“Seriously, not kidding.” My raccoon eyes widen with an attitude.
The agent nods with a heavy sigh, and after a moment of assessing me, her long fluorescent nails tap the keyboard.
“Looks like the first flight that you can make if you hurry is San Francisco.”
“Sounds great,” I say but frown. The irony of this location being the first option is a slap in the face. I try not to think about the pain and present my credit card and ID.
“It’s $627 with taxes and fees,” she adds, as though this will make a difference. A few years ago, it probably would
have, but not on this god-awful day.

Review ~ Wander Dust by Michelle Warren

Synopsis

Ever since her sixteenth birthday, strange things keep happening to Seraphina Parrish. The Lady in Black burns Sera’s memories. Unexplainable Premonitions catapult her to other cities. The Grungy Gang wants to kill her. And a beautiful, mysterious boy stalks her. But when Sera moves to Chicago, and her aunt reveals their family connection to a centuries-old secret society, she is immediately thrust into an unbelievable fantasy world, leading her on a quest to unravel the mysteries that plague her. In the end, their meanings crash into an epic struggle of loyalty and betrayal, and she’ll be forced to choose between the boy who has stolen her heart and the thing she desires most. Wander Dust is the breathtaking fantasy that will catapult you through a story of time, adventure, and love.

My Review

Sixteen year old Seraphina “Sera” Parrish is at a restaurant with her father and his girlfriend when some very bazaar things take place. These strange happenings keep occurring to the point that Sera is completely questioning her sanity. It’s not long before Sera’s father gives in to his feelings of failure and sends Sera to live with her Aunt Mona. It turns out that this was just what Sera needs. Mona has the answers to what’s been going on. Sera isn’t insane. She’s a Wanderer. She’s then enrolled in a special school for kids with “gifts.” There are three gifts: Wanderers, Seers, and Protectors. Wanderers have the ability to go back in time to view history. While this would on its own be quite an adjustment, there are some other major issues to deal with. A group of people want to use their gifts to change history to suit their own desires. These people want Sera dead. To top off this big issue, Sera still has the normal teenage issues to deal with, too. She’s falling for her Protector, Max Bishop, but she isn’t into boyfriend stealing.
While I enjoyed this book, I’d say it is probably geared more towards younger teens. I could still relate to it, but I did find a few parts to be silly – like fully decked out co-ed apartments. These were things, though, that a teen would probably find awesome. So, I didn’t fault the author with these little things that were unrealistic. It was a fast paced read, and I thought the characters were well-developed. There were places that I laughed out loud and others that had me all tensed up. The plot kept me intrigued, and with this being a trilogy, I still don’t have all the answers. I did appreciate, though, that although this is a series, and you don’t get all the answers, it still felt like it was a complete book. It doesn’t just end on a cliffhanger. For me personally, I give it a rating of a low 4 stars. I wasn’t overwhelmed with its awesomeness, but I did enjoy it nonetheless. I’ll definitely read the next in the series, and I’m looking forward to other books from Michelle.
